Thursday’s ETF To Watch: Dow Jones U.S. Technology Index Fund (IYW)

Earnings season is well underway with a mixed bag of results for investors. Starting off with Alcoa, the commodity giant brought a welcomed outlook for the year and pushed stocks higher. Then came hits from JP Morgan and Citigroup while Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs were able to meet their marks. Though there have been a few bad eggs, the general consensus is that earnings have brought a much needed lift to stocks, as the S&P 500 was able to break through 1,300 for the first time since August of last year. Today will see Google (GOOG) release their earnings statement from their most recent fiscal quarter. The beginning of earnings season last week provided a welcome distraction from the more troubling forums that have been capturing the attention of investors in recent weeks. The latest developments in Europe’s ongoing debt saga and twists and turns in Washington related to the fast-approaching debt ceiling have been steering markets in recent sessions. Those events will no doubt continue to influence asset prices this week, but investors will also have a slew of earnings reports from industry bellwethers to consider as well. But the slew of bellwethers reporting earnings this week should provide additional consideration for investors still trying to evaluate the status of the U.S. recovery. Tech ETFs In Focus As Apple (AAPL) Reports Earnings

Earnings season is upon us yet again, giving anxious investors plenty to chew on as equity markets look for direction in the second half of the year. The first week of this critical stretch saw a number of reports come in all over the board; some bellwethers posted solid numbers and guidance while others disappointed investors with dismal outlooks and soft growth projections [see ETF Winners And Losers From Week One]. Thus far, the tech and financials sectors have been battered; Intel reported strong earnings, but IBM turned in light revenues and Texas Instruments shares sank after missing estimates. After a stellar performance out of Intel to kick off earnings season last week, several other bellwethers have reported impressive results, leading some investors to believe that the market recovery is the real deal (see all the early winners and losers from the start of earnings season). Looking to add to recent recent gains will be technology ETFs, which are watching a slew of crucial earnings reports this week. Today, all eyes were on Apple and Yahoo! after the bell as two of the most eagerly anticipated reports came out after the markets closed. The much anticipated Apple iPad tablet computer was released today across the country. The device, which has been hailed as revolutionary by many and useless by a few, could have a huge impact on the technology and consumer electronics sectors. If successful, the product could open up a whole new market for content producers who have been struggling to increase sales in recent years. Many firms have already jumped onto the iPad bandwagon, including Electronic Arts (which will offer five games for the iPad’s release) and the New York Times (which will offer an app to readers in order to view its content on the device). Google Earnings Put Tech ETFs In Focus

Google, the world leader in online search, has frequently been in the news as of late. With the announcement of their new open source phone, the Nexus One, and their threat to leave China over censorship concerns, it has been a very tumultuous quarter for the search giant. The rocky year continued late Thursday as shares of Google slumped more than 5% in after hours trading, sending shares lower by close to $30 a share. This plunge was despite the fact that the company beat earnings estimates by 31 cents a share, posting per share profits of $6.79 and net revenues of $4.95 billion. Despite the poor reaction to the numbers, things look pretty bright for Google. Earlier this year, best-selling author Harry Dent , Jr. ventured into the ETF industry, launching the Dent Tactical ETF (DENT) in a move that further blurred the lines between active and passive management. DENT is actively managed by a team of analysts using primarily economic and demographic analysis to determine the overall trend of U.S. and global economies and how consumer spending patterns may change based on this analysis. DENT has been trading for only about two months, but a look at the fund’s performance over that period and its current holdings reveals some interesting trends. After a strong earnings report from Intel on Tuesday (the company beat the Street’s estimates by seven cents) all eyes will now be on IBM and Google to see if they carry the positive momentum into the fourth quarter. Intel, JP Morgan Boost Tech, Financials ETFs

Many analysts are building up the coming weeks as one of the most important earnings seasons in recent memory, a report card on the strength and sustainability of the economic recovery in the U.S. So far, the grades have been stellar. Intel revenue and profits declined from a year ago, but the chip maker managed to beat Wall Street’s expectations, indicating that the bettered chip industry may be on the brink of a comeback. In the financial sector, J.P. Morgan reported much better-than-expected results on the back of strength in its investment banking unit. Despite continued loan losses, J.P. Morgan saw “broad-based growth” in several of its businesses according to chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon. The upbeat results gave hope to investors expecting most major financial institutions to post earnings declines.
