USCF Offers New Type Of Copper ETF (CPER)

United States Commodity Funds, the firm behind the innovative USCI, rolled out another product created through its partnership with SummerHaven this week. The new United States Copper Index Fund (CPER) will be linked to the SummerHaven Copper Index Total Return, a single-commodity index consisting of copper futures contracts traded on the COMEX exchange. The index is constructed and maintained with the goal of minimizing the adverse impact of contango on returns while utilizing futures contracts in the liquid portion of the futures curve. The methodology behind the index is relatively straightforward, and based on observable market prices at the end of each month. First, at the end of each month it is determined whether the copper market is in backwardation or contango, and the annualized percentage price difference between the next-to-expiration copper futures contracts and each of the next four closest-to-expiration futures contracts is calculated. After concerns about Europe dominated trading in the early part of the week, U.S. and international markets staged a comeback in the final sessions of the week, putting most major benchmarks higher but not enough to break through into the green on the week. Though Friday was light on volume ahead of an extended holiday weekend, there was no shortage of significant economic data. Consumer spending disappointed analysts and pending home sales plummeted, but bullish comments from G-8 leaders were enough to outweigh those negative developments. Commodities continued to shine over the last several sessions, with silver reclaiming big chunks of the ground lost during its extreme sell-off earlier this month and energy commodities once again demonstrated strength thanks to impressive overseas demand. Weekly Recap Last week proved to be quite bumpy for investors, as asset classes from stocks to commodities–and everything in between–swayed between gains and losses for the last several trading days on Wall Street. Volatility was abundant across all markets and domestic equity indexes ended the week relatively flat, much like crude oil and silver futures. Gold, on the other hand, manged to stage a comeback and assert its appeal as a safe-haven asset class, ending the week higher and closing at $1,513 an ounce. Despite the weak performance of equities for much of the week, the U.S. dollar failed to gain ground versus major currencies, perhaps suggesting that this weeks losses were merely a sign of profit-taking versus a more meaningful shift in fundamentals. Daily ETF Roundup: GDX Sinks, JJC Regains Lost Ground

Markets failed to respond to solid earnings reports from key market bellwethers as any hope for a strong day was soon squashed by midday trading. Still, both the Dow and the S&P 500 managed to finished the day in the green as the Dow jumped by 0.4% while the S&P 500 rose by 0.2%, however, the Nasdaq was not as fortunate, tumbling by 0.6% on the day, a figure that pushed the tech-heavy index down more than 2% for the week. Commodity markets also continued their weakness as both gold and oil resumed their recent tumble with both falling modestly in the session. While most commodities failed to move higher on the day some did manage to surge on continued supply concerns; coffee was up 3.7%, sugar and lumber both rose by 3.3% as well. Daily ETF Roundup: JJC Tumbles Thanks To China, UNG Surges On EIA Report

Equity markets endured another rocky session as a stronger dollar and concerns over China weighed on stocks across the board. The Dow and the S&P both slipped by just two points while the Nasdaq suffered more widespread losses of 0.8% thanks to weakness in the technology sector. Commodities also suffered heavily on the day as both gold and oil tumbled as the yellow metal fell by $25/oz. and oil sank below the $89.5/bbl. mark. Nevertheless, soft commodities were once again the standouts with cotton, cocoa, and sugar all posting gains on the day despite broad weakness in the metals and energy sectors. Meanwhile, in Treasury markets, yields surged across most maturity levels as investors dumped T-Bonds, pushing rates up to the 3.45% mark for the ten year and 0.63% for the two year note. Markets tumbled in the early part of Friday’s session before recouping much of their losses to close out the first week of January. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 slid by 0.2% while the Nasdaq fell by 0.3% on the day thanks to a lower than expected increase in jobs for December 2010. Commodity markets continued their recent weakness as gold fell marginally, oil finished the day flat, and most grains tumbled back from their recent highs. Currency markets remained relatively mixed as Treasury markets saw inflows that helped to push down yields across the spectrum including a drop from 0.68% to 0.6% on the two year yield. Undoubtedly the biggest story on the day was the jobs report which disappointed economists who had forecast a much more robust increase in employment for the month of December. Stocks continued an uneventful week on Thursday, as most major indexes finished slightly down on light trading volumes. After a lack of meaningful data in previous sessions, there was an abundance of good news on Thursday. Initial claims for unemployment dropped to the lowest level in more than two years last week according to Labor Department data. That development was encouraging for investors, who have watched stocks rally in recent weeks despite any evidence of job creation in the U.S. economy. Separately, better-than-expected results for pending home sales also boosted sentiment. The U.S. dollar came under pressure on Thursday, as central banks in South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia intervened in currency markets after a stronger outlook for Asian economies in 2011 prompted big gains against the greenback. Markets officially re-opened Monday after an extended holiday weekend, though trading was relatively light thanks to prolonged vacations and the fallout from a blizzard that dumped two feet of snow across much of New York. Stocks stayed in a relatively tight range for much of the session, as a lack of earnings reports or any key economic data releases gave those traders who did clock in little direction. The biggest story on Monday came out of China, where the government raised key lending and deposit rates by a quarter of a percentage point on Saturday. The move represented Beijing’s latest efforts to tap the brakes on a red hot economy that is expected. Supply Issues, Hoarding Report Send Copper ETFs Soaring

With the finish line in sight, 2010 has been a very interesting year for commodity investors; a number of products hit multi-year or all time record highs thanks to a weaker dollar, strong emerging market and supply issues across much of the globe. Most of the supply issues that have impacted commodity markets have been beyond human control, such as inclement weather destroying crops or natural disasters impacting productivity in commodity producing regions. However, as we have seen in recent weeks, supply issues can also be a direct result of human activity, and can often have just as big of an impact on commodity prices as ‘Acts of God’.
