The first month of 2011 is in the books, and January certainly displayed no shortage of action for investors. Earnings season kicked off to a relatively strong start, though disappointments sprinkled throughout cast some doubt on the strength of an ongoing recovery. Last year was a good one for almost every asset class, with the vast majority of U.S.-listed ETFs turning in gains. And for the most part, that positive trend continued in January, with many ETFs inching higher. A handful of products raced ahead in January, posting double digit gains over the course of a single month. And many of the big winners from January were the few dogs of 2010; those that were battered last year staged sharp rebounds to start the new year. As we put the finishing touches on 2010, the year has shaped up to be one of the most eventful in recent memory for global markets as a number of important events impacted the world economy. Among the events that dominated financial headlines this year were an (ongoing) sovereign debt crisis, the flash crash, a violent volcanic eruption that grounded air traffic for some time in Europe, a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and another wave of quantitative easing aimed to get the U.S. back on track. Despite the advice of some in the financial media, many investors have continued to embrace exchange-traded commodity products as efficient vehicles for establishing exposure to natural resources. Cash continues to flow into commodity ETFs, which are popular as both diversifying agents within buy-and-hold portfolios and tools for speculating on short-term price movements among more active traders. “Inverse Dollar ETFs” Continue Rally

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Wednesday that a strong dollar is key for the U.S. economy, a goal that may please U.S. consumers but that appears increasingly out of the control of the current administration. “We bear special responsibility for trying to make sure that we are implementing policy in the U.S. that will sustain confidence not just among American investors and…savers but investors around the world,” said Geithner to a group of reporters in Japan. Geithner’s comments in Japan were nothing new: he has consistently expressed his belief (publicly at least) that a strong greenback is a major component of a strong, healthy U.S. economy. In recent months, many economists have predicted that a gradually depreciating dollar could boost demand for exports that become cheaper to consumers abroad. With a roller coaster six months behind us that saw no shortage of interesting twists and turns and unsuspected headlines, we’ve finally reached the midway point of 2009. Ahead of us is the highly anticipated “second half of 2009,” which for months we’ve heard will hold returns to growth, a recovering economy, and enough green shoots feed a revolution (possibly the one taking shape in the streets of Iran?).
