The innovation in the bond ETF arena just keeps on coming, as evidenced most recently by a trio of first-to-market products launched by iShares. Though there are more than two dozen ETFs in the Corporate Bonds ETFdb Category, until recently the level of granularity available from a sector perspective was rather limited. While investors can fine tune their effective duration, credit quality, and country exposure with fixed income ETFs, the options for targeting specific types of issuers had previously been non-existent. Bond ETFs generally cast a wide net from a sector perspective, including debt from various types of companies. iShares Beefs Up Bond ETF Lineup

iShares continued to expand its suite of exchange-traded products this week with the debut of seven new bond ETFs. The new offering includes the first products available to U.S. investors that offer sector-specific exposure to the corporate bond market. The new ETFs are: iShares Barclays U.S. Treasury Bond Fund (GOVT) iShares Aaa – A Rated Corporate Bond Fund (QLTA) iShares Barclays CMBS Bond Fund (CMBS) iShares Financials Sector Bond Fund (MONY) iShares Industrials Sector Bond Fund (ENGN) iShares Utilities Sector Bond Fund (AMPS) iShares Barclays GNMA Bond Fund (GNMA) GOVT In Focus GOVT will offer broad-based exposure to U.S. Treasuries, seeking to replicate a market cap-weighted index comprised of Treasuries with at least one year remaining to maturity. Where The ETF Money Is Flowing (The Answer Might Surprise You)

As the calendars prepare to flip forward, it appears as if 2011 will go down as a record-breaking year for the ETF industry on the product development front. More than 300 new ETPs began trading this year, shattering the previous record set in 2010. But despite the record size of the ETF lineup, it appears as if growth has slowed quite a bit; cash inflows into ETFs have dropped off in 2011 compared to previous years according to data from the National Stock Exchange. Through the first 11 months of the year, total inflows into exchange-traded products stood at about $101.4 billion, meaning that massive December inflows would be needed to match the hauls for 2010 ($118.7 billion) and 2009 ($119.4).
