Van Eck Slashes Fees On Five ETFs

Van Eck announced this week that it has reduced the expense caps for five of its exchange-traded funds, effective May first. The move represents the latest development in a string of fee reductions by ETF issuers, reflecting both increasing asset bases and economies of scale as well as efforts to lure cost-conscious investors. The ETFs affected by the latest round of fee cuts include the ultra-popular GDXJ, which currently has close to $2.5 billion in assets [see all the Gold Miner ETFs here]. Nuclear ETF Meltdown: Four Funds Rocked By The Japanese Quake

The earthquake that hit northern Japan on Friday thoroughly devastated a significant portion of the Japanese countryside, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. While the loss of life and property due to the quake and tsunami was catastrophic, the events last week appear to be just the start of the country’s problems as many are growing extremely concerned over a situation brewing at one of the country’s 53 nuclear power reactors. At the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the earthquake and ensuing tsunami set off a chain of events that have made it difficult to cool the uranium off to prevent the reactors from overheating. After trying desperately to flood the reactor with both seawater and boron, a process which has more or less been unsuccessful, authorities are unsure of how to proceed. Alternative energy remains a fast growing market segment not only in the world of ETFs, but in terms of total investment as well. Since 2005, investment in clean energy increased by 230% to $162 billion in 2009. Echoing similar trends occurring throughout the global economy, emerging markets have stepped up their push to become leaders in the development of alternative energy technologies. Last year alone, China invested $34.6 billion in clean energy, while the U.S. added $18.6 billion. In addition, the World Bank recently released a report saying that the six major East Asian economies will together need roughly $80 billion in investment per year in order to stabilize their greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.
