The earthquake that hit northern Japan on Friday thoroughly devastated a significant portion of the Japanese countryside, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. While the loss of life and property due to the quake and tsunami was catastrophic, the events last week appear to be just the start of the country’s problems as many are growing extremely concerned over a situation brewing at one of the country’s 53 nuclear power reactors. At the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the earthquake and ensuing tsunami set off a chain of events that have made it difficult to cool the uranium off to prevent the reactors from overheating. After trying desperately to flood the reactor with both seawater and boron, a process which has more or less been unsuccessful, authorities are unsure of how to proceed. The company posted EPS of just 20 Canadian cents a share, which represents a four cent decline from the same period a year ago. Revenues were also down at the mining giant–off by close to 24%–but the company managed to rally on hopes of solid uranium sales to close out the year and robust demand despite price increases for the element. “The uranium spot price has increased 10.6 percent to $57.50 per pound over the weekend,” said Macquarie analyst Duncan McKeen, in a note to clients. “This significant increase follows a number of weeks of upward movement to the spot [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Nuclear ETF Meltdown: Four Funds Rocked By The Japanese Quake

Three ETFs To Watch This Week: SIL, TLT, NUCL

12 Rapid Fire ETF Ideas For 2012

May ETFdb Category Kings: Best Performing ETFs

This Week in ETFs: April 23rd Edition

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?" Since 2005, investment in clean energy increased by 230% to $162 billion in 2009. Echoing similar trends occurring throughout the global economy, emerging markets have stepped up their push to become leaders in the development of alternative energy technologies. Last year alone, China invested $34.6 billion in clean energy, while the U.S. added $18.6 billion. In addition, the World Bank recently released a report saying that the six major East Asian economies will together need roughly $80 billion in investment per year in order to stabilize their greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Despite these large numbers, clean energy only produces 6% of the world’s power suggesting that there is still plenty of room to run for this up-and-coming industry. But the distribution of assets is far from even across these funds. At the end of 2009, the ten largest iShares ETFs–only about five percent of the issuer’s product line–accounted for 50% of total assets. So there’s obviously a lot more to the iShares product line than the handful of mega-tickers–IVV, EFA, TIP, and AGG, just to name a few–that every ETF investor knows. Wind and solar power ETFs have seen significant cash inflows and jumps in price over the last year, as a positive regulatory environment offers potential for a major boost to these still developing sectors of the energy market. But the potential beneficiaries of an increased focus on clean energy initiatives go far beyond wind and solar energy. Nuclear energy gets a bad rap in many circles, but may be a key component of plans by developed nations to reduce emissions levels and oil dependence.
