Odds are that 2011 is a year many investors will be eager to forget. Ongoing uncertainty over Europe, combined with a frustrating employment situation stateside and even weakness among emerging markets has put many core asset classes in the red for the year. Most equity ETFs have struggled on the year, with major benchmarks having given back any gains that were generated in the early parts of the year. Any declines in value is always tough to swallow, but the pain obviously increases with the magnitude of the loss. Unfortunately for some, a rather large chunk of the ETF universe has experienced big declines in 2011; through December 19, more than 350 non-leveraged ETPs had lost 10% of more year-to-date [see Looking Back At Our ETF Ideas For 2011]. Stocks took a dive lower today as investors finally took profits following three consecutive days in bright green territory. The S&P 500 was off by 2%, while the NASDAQ fared a bit worse, down 2.26% on the day. This decline was a bit overdue considering the stellar equity market performance over the past few days coupled with the fact that Euro zone debt-woes remain largely unanswered as investors await for more guidance. “There’s always a concern about what is going to happen with Europe and how they are going to put together a deal that satisfies everyone,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. “The bottom line is, investors in Greek paper shouldn’t be thinking about a haircut; they should be worried about getting scalped.” Worse-than-expected corporate earnings results at home put additional downward pressure on equity indexes. Daily ETF Roundup: GDX Surges On Fed Hopes, PBW Slides On Solar’s Slump

Although stocks rallied in mid-day trading, they couldn’t hang on to the surge and fell back towards breakeven to close out Tuesday’s session. The Dow managed to finish up by 0.1% but the broader indexes were not so lucky as the S&P 500 fell by 0.2% and the Nasdaq sank by 0.9%. Utilities and health care led on the upside while basic materials, some large cap tech, and a few big name financials led the way on the downside. In terms of commodities, the headline products of gold and oil both finished the day higher as gold rose by about 1.5% and oil gained about 55 cents a barrel or 0.6%. Other natural resources, namely the softs and most of the energy group, also trended higher although some grains and industrial metals led on the downside. Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Surges Nearly 10% On Market Woes, PBW Dips On Obama Speech

Today closed out the shortened trading week on a devastating note, as investors all around the world participated in a massive sell-off. The Dow slipped over 300 points and the S&P 500 tanked 2.7%. What is more surprising, is the fact that gold finished the day relatively flat. Typically, when equities tank, gold see strong gains as it is one of the few safe spots for investors who flee their equity positions. Last night saw President Obama give a major speech about the unemployment issues in our nation, outlining a $447 billion plan to bolster the economy and hiring alike. Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Rises On Jobs Uncertainty, PBW Tumbles After Solyndra Bankruptcy

American stocks faced weakness in Thursday trading as all of the major benchmarks slumped into the red on the day. The Dow fell by roughly 1% while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq sank by more, falling by 1.2% and 1.3%, respectively. Weakness permeated all sectors of the market, but consumer goods managed to do better than most while financials and tech led on the downside. Commodities mostly trended lower as well, as the headline commodities of gold and oil both fell slightly with gold falling by 0.2% and crude oil dropping by just a penny. Losses were also seen in the softs corner of the market, as losses of at least 3.7% were seen in the wheat and corn markets to open up the month. American equity markets fell off a cliff in Thursday trading as worries over a double dip recession dominated the market and sent stocks reeling. The Dow plunged by over 510 points to finish the session lower by 4.3% while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq fell by 4.8% and 5.1%, respectively. Although losses were broad and deep throughout the market, the largest falls came in the basic materials, financials, and tech spaces, while consumer and service firms did better than most. Commodity markets were also hard hit on the day, thanks in large part to a strengthening dollar. Gold finished the day down just 0.8% while crude tumbled along with the market, sinking by close to 6% in the session. U.S. equity markets plunged in Wednesday trading as weak data and more fears over a debt default hit stocks. The Dow plunged by 1.6% while the broader indexes fell by over 2% with the S&P falling by just more than two percent and the Nasdaq sinking by 2.7% on the day, led by large losses out of tech giants Cisco and Apple. Meanwhile, in commodity markets, most natural resource benchmarks finished the day lower as WTI crude fell by close to 2.3% and safe haven commodities finished marginally lower as well. Grains and other softs also finished in the red; only wheat, corn, and sugar finished the day with gains worth mentioning. These losses came thanks to surprising strength in the U.S. dollar as the index rose by 0.8% on the day to just over the $74 mark. Debt fears continued to hang over Wall Street to start the week as equities fell across the board thanks to a continued stalemate in the talks in Washington D.C. The Dow led the major indexes lower, falling by 70 basis points, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 both lost about 0.6% on the day. Losses were pretty widespread throughout the day as health care and financials led the losers while utilities, tech, and basic materials led the way on the upside. In commodity markets, gold continued to surge as its appeal as a safe haven allowed the metal to shine brightly to start the week; the yellow metal finished Monday trading at the $1,615/oz. mark, up nearly 0.8%.
