Odds are that 2011 is a year many investors will be eager to forget. Ongoing uncertainty over Europe, combined with a frustrating employment situation stateside and even weakness among emerging markets has put many core asset classes in the red for the year. Most equity ETFs have struggled on the year, with major benchmarks having given back any gains that were generated in the early parts of the year. Any declines in value is always tough to swallow, but the pain obviously increases with the magnitude of the loss. Unfortunately for some, a rather large chunk of the ETF universe has experienced big declines in 2011; through December 19, more than 350 non-leveraged ETPs had lost 10% of more year-to-date [see Looking Back At Our ETF Ideas For 2011]. Aside from the vast expansion in the exchange-traded product universe, the last five years have been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Global financial markets witnessed an unprecedented economic downturn after the collapse of the U.S. housing market, only to stage a truly remarkable recovery in the years following. There are now more than 1,350 ETPs available on the market, most of which are relatively new introductions to investors. Those with longer track records have endured some severe losses in recent years, putting a significant dent in many portfolios; of the 330 or so available prior to November 2006, close to half have delivered negative returns. Amidst the chaos in the markets in recent years, some exchange-traded products [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Plays For The End Of Europe’s Recession

Europe ETFs: All Over The Board

Ten Unexpected Observations On YTD ETF Returns

<a href='http://etfdb.com/2011/etf-insider-will-the-supercommittee-surprise/' title='ETF Insider: Will The Supercommittee Surprise?
American equity markets fell off a cliff in Thursday trading as worries over a double dip recession dominated the market and sent stocks reeling. The Dow plunged by over 510 points to finish the session lower by 4.3% while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq fell by 4.8% and 5.1%, respectively. Although losses were broad and deep throughout the market, the largest falls came in the basic materials, financials, and tech spaces, while consumer and service firms did better than most. Commodity markets were also hard hit on the day, thanks in large part to a strengthening dollar. Gold finished the day down just 0.8% while crude tumbled along with the market, sinking by close to 6% in the session.
The Dow plunged by 1.6% while the broader indexes fell by over 2% with the S&P falling by just more than two percent and the Nasdaq sinking by 2.7% on the day, led by large losses out of tech giants Cisco and Apple.
Debt fears continued to hang over Wall Street to start the week as equities fell across the board thanks to a continued stalemate in the talks in Washington D.C. The Dow led the major indexes lower, falling by 70 basis points, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 both lost about 0.6% on the day. Losses were pretty widespread throughout the day as health care and financials led the losers while utilities, tech, and basic materials led the way on the upside. In commodity markets, gold continued to surge as its appeal as a safe haven allowed the metal to shine brightly to start the week; the yellow metal finished Monday trading at the $1,615/oz. mark, up nearly 0.8%. Other commodities were more mixed, as most softs fell by more than 1.5% including a 2.3% loss for cocoa and a 1.9% slump in sugar futures. Energy commodities also trended lower, although, [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Surges Nearly 10% On Market Woes, PBW Dips On Obama Speech

Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Rises On Jobs Uncertainty, PBW Tumbles After Solyndra Bankruptcy

Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Skyrockets On Market Crash, PBW Plummets On Slowdown Fears

Daily ETF Roundup: PBW Tanks On Risk Aversion & Oil, VXX Jumps On Continued Uncertainty

Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Surges After Bernanke Testimony, PBW Sinks On Lower Oil And Subsidy Fears
