SPDR Attack: State Street Rolls Out More Sector ETFs

State Street, the issuer behind the two largest U.S.-listed exchange-traded products, announced today the launch today of three new funds offering targeted exposure to key sub-sectors of the U.S. economy. The new funds will track narrow corners of the technology, health care, and industrials sector, giving investors new options for placing targeted bets on the U.S. economy. Can Defense ETFs Survive A Spending Slowdown?

Over the past few months, one of the key issues that has been facing the U.S. is the enormous budget deficit and how best to get this debt under control. The U.S. has already lost its prized ‘AAA’ credit rating according to S&P and it appears that others may follow if more steps aren’t taken to reign in spending. Thanks to this, a legislative ‘supercommittee’ has been set up in order to find ways to cut spending, while at the same time, allowing the nation to grow. The task is pretty immense as the 12 person group is supposed to somehow agree on an additional $1.5 trillion in savings over a ten year period, not an easy find given how deadlocked and partisan our Congress has become. Three ETFs To Watch This Week: GDX, PPA, EPU

This past week was another wild one for markets as a number of earnings reports combined with debt crises to create a very choppy couple of days. While worries over a debt deal in the U.S. and concerns over a European debt contagion may have weighed on markets, most equities managed to finish the week higher for the most part, boosted by extremely solid performances in Tuesday and Thursday trading. Tech earnings were especially strong as robust figures from IBM and unsurprisingly, Apple, helped to carry sentiment for this important corner of the market. Additionally, the transports, which many look to for strength coming out of a weak patch, also posted strong results as both CSX and Union Pacific beat estimates on higher shipping volume and price increases. ETFs To Play A U.S. Export Boom

The first year and a half of president Obama’s term has been market by bold initiatives to reshape domestic policies and transform the U.S. economy. And for the most part the administration has followed through on its promises, already pushing through overhauls of the health care and financial systems. During his January State of the Union Address, Obama announced his National Export Initiative, a plan to double the country’s exports within five years. Boeing Evades Competition, Puts Defense ETFs In Focus

Wednesday was an eventful day for Dow component Boeing (BA), one of the largest global aircraft manufacturers and third largest defense contractor in the world. While the company has seen a lot of bad press in regards to the lengthy delays to its 787 Dreamliner plane, two events early Wednesday look to give the company a positive long-term boost. Boeing reported that it is making an offer for combat engineering firm Argon ST for roughly $775 million in cash, or $34.50 a share for Argon. The move looks to expand Boeing’s electronic intelligence and surveillance business and help the company diversify more into defense and away from aerospace. In another development for Boeing, the World Trade Organization has ruled that European governments were providing improper subsidies to Airbus, Boeing’s main competitor, in the form of government loans at below-market interest rates. Boeing’s Bullish Outlook Boosts Aerospace ETFs

Boeing Co., the Chicago-based aerospace and defense corporation, announced on Friday that it plans to increase production of its 777 and 747 aircraft amidst strengthening demand from the airline industry. “We see 2010 as the year of overall economic recovery within the industry and 2011 a year where airlines return to profitability,” said Randy Tinseth, Boeing’s vice president of marketing. “As a result, we anticipate an increase in demand for airplanes in 2012 and beyond.” Boeing had been planning to ramp up production of its 777 jet from five per month to seven per month in early 2012. That move will now happen about six months earlier, in mid 2011. After staging an impressive recovery in 2009 to claw back significant losses incurred during the recent recession, the aerospace and defense sector has hit a few speed bumps early in 2010, as potentially negative developments both home and abroad threaten to sap demand. “Gross Intervention” In China Last week, China announced the suspension of military exchanges with the U.S. as a response to a $6.4 billion sale of weapons to Taiwan. In addition to threatening to destabilize relations between the two superpowers, the move could also harm U.S. industry. Calling the arms sale “a gross intervention into China’s internal affairs,” China will also impose sanctions on U.S. companies involved in the sale. In accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. is obligated to provide Taiwan with “arms of a defensive character,” but similar actions in the past have enraged China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory. While there are great concerns about the Obama administration’s views towards military spending, many external threats seem unlikely to dissipate in the coming decade, meaning that the aerospace & defense sector may be one of the most stable American industries. Since military goods are among the few products that are still made primarily on American soil, many are looking to this sector to help American industry survive the current downturn. Moreover, U.S. allies such as Japan are looking to upgrade their defenses, a trend from which U.S. defense companies could benefit.
