Although many investors have been focused in on oil markets and major oil producers such as ExxonMobil this week, many of the oil service companies have also been surging as well. Broad ETFs tracking this market segment have risen by more than 4% in just three days of trading, as many investors have bought up these companies in anticipation of a wave of new projects thanks to near $100/bbl. oil and continued tension in the Middle East, two factors which make excess exploration more likely. This trend looks likely to boost investor demand for oil service firms and increase expectations for their full year outlook since no matter how successful the exploration operations are, extra drilling for oil will boost the need for various auxiliary services. Oil ETFs Slide As “Top Kill” Fails, Obama Lashes Out

When the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded in late April, few expected the story to be dominating headlines almost six weeks later. However, as oil began to spill out and BP’s numerous efforts to contain the problem failed, it became increasingly clear that this would become one of the worst environmental disasters in world history. In its latest attempt, BP tried to plug the leak using a ‘top kill’ method, which sought to pump mud into the well. More than 1.2 million gallons of mud were used, but BP retreated from the plan over the weekend as it became clear that the “top kill” was not going to be successful due to most of the mud escaping out of the damaged riser. Finding The Right Oil ETF For A Crude Rally

As storm clouds continue to gather over the euro zone, the repercussions of a rise in uncertainty have been felt in nearly every corner of the global economy. All assets denominated in euro have fallen out of favor. Financial stocks with exposure to European debt have been sold off. Even South American emerging markets have been battered by a wave of risk aversion as investors seek out the security of safe havens. Crude oil has also felt the weight of uncertainty in recent weeks, as front-month futures contracts have now declined in ten of the last 11 trading days, the longest losing streak since October 2003. After an early rally dissipated on Tuesday, crude settled below $70 per barrel. The United States Oil Fund (USO), which offers exposure to crude through a futures-based strategy, has now lost more than 16% over the last month and 10% over the last week [...]

Deepwater Spill Contaminates More Than Just Water: Oil ETFs Plunge

In recent weeks, no news story has dominated headlines as much as the ongoing saga playing out in the Gulf of Mexico, better known as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It has been nearly a month since an oil well blowout caused an explosion 40 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast, sparking what has already become one of the worst environmental disasters ever. Conflicting reports over the size of the leak have come out in recent weeks, with some groups claiming that the amount of oil spilling into the ocean is significantly greater than initial estimates. As teams scramble to contain the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico, some investors are feeling the repercussions on Wall Street. Obama Opens Offshore Drilling; Oil ETFs Soar

Earlier today, President Obama announced that he is lifting bans on offshore drilling and oil and gas exploration off the Virginia coast, move likely to renew a heated debate between environmental groups and Big Oil. Obama also announced that he will be expanding lease sales for oil and gas exploration on the Atlantic seaboard. The plan, which will impact offshore exploration through 2017, includes the lease sale of a tract of Atlantic waters 50 miles off the Virginia coast and plans for new seismic studies along south- and mid-Atlantic states that could help pinpoint pockets of oil and gas. That research would guide future drilling decisions on the Atlantic seaboard. The lifting of the ban on offshore drilling is controversial because it paves the way for the first sale of offshore oil and gas in the Atlantic in more than two decades. According to its August Atlantic Hurricane Outlook, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects a “near- to below-normal Atlantic hurricane season as the calming effects of El Niño continue to develop.” After getting off to a very mild start (there has been little activity since the official June 1 start of the season), it appears that as we enter the historical peak period, increased signs of activity are indicating it might not be smooth sailing ahead. Early Wednesday, Hurricane Bill, the first named hurricane of the season, strengthened to a dangerous Category 4 storm with top winds near 135 miles per hour, reminding coastal residents and Wall Street investors alike that even in a mild hurricane season, it only takes one storm to wreak havoc.
