Stocks markets finished the week in bright green territory as investors rejoiced over encouraging developments in the Euro zone along with positive earnings surprises on the home front. The tug of war between the bulls and the bears continues however as quarterly performance results from industry giants were mixed across the board; Google and Citigroup both missed the mark, while Bank of America, IBM, and Intel surpassed analyst estimates. Better-than-expected jobless claims helped restore confidence and growing optimism in the economic recovery tipped markets higher throughout the week as bullish pressures prevailed. Bullish momentum propelled stocks higher last week, although the French credit downgrade drama on Friday was enough to rekindle Euro zone woes and spark a broad-based sell-off before the weekend. Standard & Poor’s credit downgrade of France and Austria sparked volatile trading to start the week across European and Asian markets; investors on Wall Street will have to wait until tomorrow to readjust their portfolios as U.S. equity and bond markets are closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Weekly Outlook The coming week will be stacked with economic data releases both at home and on the international front. Examining Three Global Real Estate ETFs

The housing sector has been rather difficult to predict in the past few years. Once the U.S. housing bubble burst and the Great Recession began, investors pulled out of a number of domestic equities fearing that the crisis would last for quite some time. Unfortunately, those investors were correct, as housing in the U.S. is still fighting to reach pre-recession levels. In fact, the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index is just now reaching 2003 levels at around 155-160. To recover to its 2007 high, the index needs to get up to about 225, an increase of about 45%. Vanguard Launches International Real Estate ETF (VNQI)

Vanguard continued its blitz of new ETF products this week, rolling out an international counterpart to its ultra-popular real estate ETF (VNQ). The Vanguard Global ex-U.S. Real Estate Index Fund began trading on Monday; the new fund is available in four different share classes, including ETF shares (VNQI). The fund will seek to replicate the S&P Global ex-U.S. Property Index, a benchmark that includes real estate investment trusts (REITs) and real estate operating companies (REOCs) in emerging and developed markets outside the U.S. “Modest exposure to real estate investments in a broadly diversified investment portfolio can help moderate overall portfolio volatility and serve as a hedge against inflation,” said Vanguard’s chief investment officer Gus Sauter in a press release. “With international real estate securities representing a growing portion of the overall real estate market, a counterpart to our domestic REIT Index Fund is a natural addition to our index fund [...]

AdvisorShares Teams Up With Cambria On Active Global ETF (GTAA)

AdvisorShares continues to expand its footprint in the active ETF arena, announcing today the launch of the Cambria Global Tactical ETF (GTAA). The new fund comes out of a partnership with Cambria Investment Management, the firm run by Mebane Faber and Eric Richardson. Faber is perhaps best known for his 2007 paper A Quantitative Approach To Tactical Asset Allocation, in which he presented a quantitative market timing model designed to manage risk in various markets and deliver equity-like returns with bond-like volatility and drawdown. Along with Richardson, Faber co-authored The Ivy Portfolio, an influential book that offers average investors a strategy to mimic the world-beating returns posted by endowments at Harvard and Yale. Equity markets started October in much the same way they began last month; higher thanks to solid data. The Dow and S&P 500 both gained roughly 0.4% while the tech heavy Nasdaq rose by a more modest 0.1%. Precious metals and other commodities also soared as gold continued its march higher, finishing the day at the $1,320/oz. mark; oil soared up past the $81.50/bbl. level. Meanwhile in currency markets, the euro rose once again, as the greenback finished the week 1.1% lower against the common currency in Friday trading. Today’s gains were powered by strong construction spending and robust consumer confidence levels, which both came in ahead of expectations. This news led to quality performances out of the big names in the financial and basic materials sectors including a 4.6% gain for Citigroup, a 3.1% gain for Occidental Petroleum, and a 4.4% surge by major copper producer Freeport McMoRan. U.S. equity markets had a choppy Friday to close out the week, as all the major equity markets managed to finish in positive territory despite a steep drop to start the day off. Oil again finished the day lower, this time by close to $1/bbl. as the U.S. dollar finished mostly flat against the major currencies of the world. Treasury markets also stayed rangebound, while precious metals continued to remain in focus; gold reached a new intra-day high of $1,284/oz. before slipping back to the $1,276 mark to close out the week. Today’s choppy session saw large gains in some of the tech sector, led by a strong day out of Oracle. The company basked in the glow of its quality earnings report, which helped to propel the stock higher by close to 9%. Believe It Or Not: U.S Real Estate ETFs Crushing International Counterparts

With many equity markets plunging around the globe, investors are flocking towards safe-haven investments. This flight to quality has left many investors piling into U.S. Treasury bonds and the U.S. dollar in general. This has helped to sink commodity prices and send T-Bill yields lower decreasing the desirability of each substantially as asset classes to stash cash in. This leaves one type of investment that most investors would not consider given recent market events; real estate. Despite their position at the epicenter of the recent mortgage meltdown, many U.S. real estate ETFs have rebounded nicely in 2010. In fact, of the 13 ETFs in the domestic Real Estate ETFdb Category only 1 has posted a loss for the year.
