That same period of time has also been a period of tremendous volatility in global financial markets; the last five years have witnessed an unprecedented financial crisis, one of the most severe recessions in history, and a remarkable recovery in both 2009 and 2010. A look back at the performance of exchange-traded funds over the last five years (ending October 31) highlights the tremendous growth of the ETF industry as well as the challenging realities of recent history.
ETF Securities, the giant of the European ETF market that has amassed more than $4 billion in a suite of seven U.S.-listed products, is taking steps towards an initial public offering according to the Wall Street Journal. The ETF issuer has reportedly retained Citigroup and Bank of America Merrill Lynch to discuss its strategic options, which may include an initial public offering depending on market conditions. No comment was available from either bank or from ETF Securities. There has been no shortage of acquisition activity in the ETF space over the last several years, highlighting the appeal of the rapidly-growing industry. Guggenheim acquired both Rydex and Claymore, while BlackRock snapped up market leader iShares in a $13.5 billion deal. Silver has quietly emerged as one of the top-performing asset classes of 2010, thanks to many of the same factors that have driven gold prices higher. Silver has climbed by more than 60% so far in 2010, more than doubling the run-up in gold [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

The Definitive Silver ETF Guide: Silver ETF Investing 101

Seven Reasons Why Silver Could Soar

Lessons From The Leveraged Silver ETF (AGQ)

Three ETFs For $50 Silver

Top Five Commodity ETFs Of 2010

The greenback has already lost close to 8% over the past few months against the world’s other major currencies, and while a Chinese rate hike earlier this week helped to temporarily stem the losses, the downward has now resumed. As confidence in paper currency wanes, many investors have been buying up precious metals ETFs, especially those that physically hold gold. In fact, all three of the gold-backed ETFs have more than $1 billion under management and are led by the $56 billion Gold SPDR (GLD). Investors are also looking beyond gold to the rest of the precious metals asset class as options in this increasingly tricky economic situation. Over $1 billion is now invested in physically-backed platinum (PPLT) and palladium (PALL) ETFs, while physically-backed silver funds currently [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Commodity ETFs Get No Love From Investors

Playing Precious Metals Through Equity ETFs

Beyond GLD: Three Alternative Precious Metal ETFs

ETF Securities Launches Asian Gold Shares Fund (AGOL)

PPLT, PALL Come Flying Out Of The Gate

Perhaps no corner of the ETF market has exploded as rapidly as the precious metals space, as the democratization of an asset class previously off limits to many investors has resulted in billions of dollars in cash inflows. The SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) is now the second-largest ETF by total assets, with more than $53 billion under management. Two other physically-backed gold ETFs (IAU and SGOL) have aggregate assets of nearly $5 billion, while a couple of silver funds (SLV and SIVR) hold another $6 billion. Even the relatively young platinum ETF (PPLT, $485 million) and palladium ETF (PALL, $393 million) have been huge hits with investors. In aggregate these seven physically-backed precious metals ETFs represent about 8% of total ETF assets, a remarkable statistic highlighting the amount of interest in this asset class. Precious metals represent the only corner of the commodity market where exposure to spot prices is [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Commodity ETFs Get No Love From Investors

ETF Securities Planning Precious Metal Basket ETF

Precious Metal ETFs: Physical vs. Equity Exposure

Inflation-Fighting ETFs Back In Focus

Beyond GLD: Three Alternative Precious Metal ETFs
