The Volatility Index (VIX) has been sitting below the 30 mark since the massive equity market rally last week; however, the VIX has been creeping up higher since last Friday, suggesting that uncertainty will remain a dominant theme as long as Euro zone debt woes remain unresolved. Checking In: Trading Ideas This week, our technical trading ideas included short recommendations in two sector-specific ETFs along with a long position in a popular commodity fund. But while the depth of the ETF space has increased, the industry remains quite top-heavy; a relatively small number of products accounts for the lion’s share of total assets.
One of the biggest stories in the ETF world over the past few trading sessions has been the Gold SPDR (GLD) taking the top spot among most widely-held ETFs, finally surpassing SPY for the AUM crown. Yet, just as soon as this happened and gold hit $1,900/oz., investors saw a brutal sell-off in the precious metal, causing prices to fall to their current level around $1,770/oz. While the reasons for this decline are unclear– some blame profit-taking while others point to market manipulation– one has to wonder if a similar situation plagued the rest of the precious metal group and their respective ETFs, specifically, silver, platinum, and palladium. Thanks to some gains in Thursday’s session, as well as strong buying to start the week, GLD is now down just 3.4% over the past five days. While the rest of the precious metal group is also experiencing losses, they vary significantly from metal [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Commodity ETFs Get No Love From Investors

ETF Securities Planning Precious Metal Basket ETF

Playing Precious Metals Through Equity ETFs

Beyond GLD: Three Alternative Precious Metal ETFs

What’s Driving The Palladium ETF (PALL)?

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?" One of the biggest advantages of ETFs over their mutual fund counterparts is their abundant liquidity; they can be traded intraday just like any other stock, opening up the world to active traders seeking to cash in on the lucrative opportunities offered through the exchange traded world. In fact, there are numerous products that are designed specifically for traders to use on a daily basis, as they offer exposure to volatile sectors that tend to exhibit large movements on an intraday basis.
This week saw one of the worst strings of trading sessions in nearly a year as investors have grown increasingly worried that Congress will be unable to set aside their differences and come to terms on some sort of debt deal to avoid a default. If a deal is not passed soon, major credit rating agencies have threatened to kick the U.S. out of the AAA club, which could be devastating for the global economy, as we would no longer be the go to safe haven economy. Gold saw new highs this week as the metal broke through the $1,600 per ounce mark and kept right on going. Meanwhile, oil suffered a rough week as crude is now below $96 per barrel. Total ETP inflows totaled more than $8 billion last month, after May saw about $800 million in outflows–attributable in large part to big outflows from the S&P 500 SPDR (SPY).
