Earnings got off to a rocky start this week as Citigroup missed analyst expectations, casting doubt on what will be a busy end to the week as dozens of blue chip firms will report earnings. Investors are looking to earnings season to revamp the bull run that has faltered in recent weeks, as less-than-encouraging data has put a damper on investor confidence. This slew of earnings has already brought big news, as Google announced a share split that will certainly shake up how the company is ran. This week will watch earnings season continue in full stride as a number of bellwether firms are set to announce their most recent fiscal quarter’s statements. Last week saw some mixed results, with companies like Citigroup and Google missing, while others like Wells Fargo, IBM, and Intel were able to lift markets. In fact, the S&P 500 was able to break through the 1,300 barrier for the first time since August of last year, sparking some much needed investor confidence. UBS Launches Risk On / Risk Off ETNs

UBS, the issuer behind one of the broadest lineups of ETNs available to U.S. investors, continued the aggressive expansion of its product lineup this week with the introduction of two unique offerings. The company rolled out a pair of blunt instruments designed to be used in high level “risk on / risk off” trades, a term that has become popular in recent months as risky assets have exhibited strong correlations with one another and so-called “safe havens” have thrived whenever uncertainty pops up. The new ETRACS Fisher Gartman Risk On On ETN (ONN) will seek to replicate the Fisher-Gartman Risk Index, a benchmark that includes long positions in various risky asset classes such as stocks and commodities and short positions in traditional safe haven investments such as sovereign bonds. HOLDRS Conversion Begins: Investor Action Required

Van Eck has begun the process of converting six HOLDRS products offered by Merrill Lynch into traditional ETFs that will be included under the Market Vectors lineup, offering investors an opportunity to exchange their receipts in HOLDRS trusts for shares in the new ETFs. The exchange requires affirmative action on the part of investors, meaning that advisors or individuals with positions in existing HOLDRS must take action in order to receive shares in the new ETFs. The exchange offer is expected to remain open until December 20. “We have structured the offers, in our view, to be investor friendly,” said Adam Phillips, Managing Director of ETFs at Van Eck Global. “Potential benefits of participation include the opportunity for uninterrupted exposure to target industries, a partially tax-advantaged exchange, and no costs associated with the offers.” Van Eck also noted that the new structure could allow investors to achieve more complete and [...]

The past week was yet another choppy one in the markets as European events continued to dominate headlines. Generally speaking, however, it was a pretty solid period for broad stocks as the S&P 500 added nearly 6% in the time period, helping to reverse much of the recent losses in the market. This sharp turnaround was largely due to speculation over an expanded EFSF and hopes that the continent’s two largest economies, Germany and France, would be able to cobble together a plan that would crush default fears once and for all. Additionally, investors also breathed a sign of relief over the situation in China as well. The country appears to be deploying at least part of its vast reserves in order to help ease the blow of tightening policies, suggesting that a hard landing might not be ahead for China after all, increasing investor sentiment in the process. ETF Shakeup: HOLDRS Headed For Extinction, ELEMENTS To Follow?

The competitive landscape of the ETF industry has evolved rapidly over the last several years, with several new players–both big and small–making a push into the space. From financial giants such as RBS and Citi to relative unknowns such as Javelin and Precidian, the roster of active ETF issuers has grown to nearly four dozen. Now, mirroring a trend playing out in the lineup of exchange-traded products, it appears that some contraction is in order. Van Eck, Merrill Partner: Conversion of HOLDRS Ahead?

Van Eck announced last week a partnership with Merrill Lynch that may ultimately lead to the conversion of several HOLDRS products to soon-to-be-launched Market Vectors ETFs. As part of the agreement, Van Eck will introduce six new ETFs that maintain the same tickers as the existing HOLDRS but that will be part of the Market Vectors family of ETFs. Van Eck said it expects the exchange to be launched in the third quarter of this year and consummated in the fourth quarter. The agreement would cover six existing HOLDRS, which would be converted to Van Eck ETFs that seek to replicate Market Vectors indices. Three ETFs To Watch This Week: FXE, ALUM, SMH

Equity Markets were range bound last week, struggling to make significant moves in either direction. Gold took a big tumble early in the week dropping well below the $1,400 mark as concerns over the health of the global economy subsided. Wall Street also rallied in the middle of the week following a round of positive jobs and non-manufacturing data. Treasuries were flat for the most part as well, with the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) finishing the week lower by just 1.8%. Yet, domestic markets took a small hit on Friday following the disappointing unemployment report, which showed a decline in the national unemployment rate– as a result of people giving up on the search for work– as fewer jobs were added than expected.
