ETF Database has introduced another new resource to its lineup of analytical tools designed to help financial advisors and individual investors navigate through the rapidly-increasing universe of exchange-traded products: ETF Scorecards that provide relevant, timely, and unbiased analysis of more than 1,300 ETPs. The ETF Scorecards are in-depth, customized analyst reports that highlight the noteworthy features of each ETF in plain English, alongside rankings of the fund on 20+ metrics including expenses, performance, volatility, and distributions [see links to sample ETF Scorecards below]. But while the depth of the ETF space has increased, the industry remains quite top-heavy; a relatively small number of products accounts for the lion’s share of total assets.
With all the money printing from the Fed and gold approaching historic levels, it is clear that many investors are growing increasingly worried about the prospect of inflation striking their portfolios in the near term. Since the economy still remains incredibly weak, more quantitative easing cannot be ruled out at this month’s FOMC meeting, increasing the possibility of price increases across the board. Add in the turmoil currently rocking European markets and it is easy to see why today’s CPI report in the U.S. could have a huge impact on a number of sectors for the near term. After last month’s 0.5% uptick in month-over-month terms, investors are expecting price increases to cool a little bit for the most recent month, coming in at a 0.2% change. Meanwhile, in the core CPI, less food and energy, the consensus calls for another month of a 0.2% change. Yet again, fears in the euro-zone have sparked massive sell-offs in global equities, as more countries become at risk of defaulting this year. Worries over the U.S. economy are also a major factor in the market slump, as many analysts have slashed the U.S. growth outlook for the year. President Obama even weighed in on the situation, stating that our economy will rebound once the housing market finds its footing; a scenario that he feels will not play out for about a year. When markets endured a similar period last year, the Fed rode in to the rescue as they announced a $600 billion dollar QE2 program, sending markets surging.
Wednesday was yet another range-bound day on Wall Street. Stocks opened higher, but proceeded to sell-0ff before noon, ending up basically where they started the week. Continuing uncertainty and a lack of key economic data releases makes investing in the current environment that much more difficult. The technology sector came into focus on Wednesday as it fell into red territory after industry giant Dell missed earnings estimates and cut its sales forecast going forward. Gold inched a bit higher, closing right above $1,790 an ounce.
Crude oil on the other hand surged to $89 a barrel in the morning, then proceeded to sell-off and settle around the $87.50 level towards the end of the day.
Fear ran wild across every corner of the financial markets last week and nearly every asset class fell victim to brutally volatile trading. Friday was the only day during which the Dow Jones Industrial Average did not swing by more than 400 points, managing to regain some of the losses on Thursday and Friday and end the week lower by less than 2%. Amidst all of the uncertainty, gold made yet another run higher and futures prices for the hot yellow metal hit record highs, soaring to $1,817 an ounce on Wednesday evening. Weekly Outlook The coming week is sparse with major economic data releases, although investors will have a plateful of inflation data to digest as CPI data for the United Kingdom, Canada, and U.S. is slated come out. At home, housing market and industrial production data will take center stage as investors look for reassurance that the economy [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: Volatility Is Still Lurking

ETF Insider: Caution, Bumpy Trading Ahead

ETF Insider: Bears Still In Charge

ETF Insider: Stocks Look For Support

ETF Insider: Picky Bulls, Broad Bears

Wall Street finished this rocky trading week like it started, as all of the major benchmarks finished the day well off of the session’s highs. The Dow fell by 0.8% while the S&P 500 sank by 0.7% and the Nasdaq tumbled by just 0.4% in comparison, as weakness in the GDP report combined with gloom over the debt ceiling debacle to cause many traders to flee risky assets. Meanwhile, in commodity markets, gold finished higher by nearly $11/oz. to come within a few dollars of its all-time high thanks to continued uncertainty over the American economy. Unfortunately, this trend had the opposite impact on oil as the vital commodity finished the day below the $96/bbl. level, down more than 1.5%. Softs also plunged on the day as all of the grains finished the week lower led by a nearly 2.6% loss in both corn and Chicago wheat, although industrial metals and most [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Inflation-Fighting ETFs Back In Focus

Three ETFs to Watch This Week: EIS, TIP, GDX

IndexIQ Launches Two Inflation Protected ETFs

iShares: The Low Cost ETF Issuer?

iShares Rolls Out Commodity-Focused Equity ETFs
