iShares Debuts Small Cap Emerging Markets ETF (EEMS)

iShares, the market leader in the U.S. ETF industry, rolled out a complement to its ultra-popular MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (EEM) on Thursday. The recently launched MSCI Emerging Markets Small Cap Index Fund (EEMS) will offer exposure to small cap companies in developing economies by seeking to replicate an index comprised of stocks that represent approximately the bottom 14% of market cap. The underlying index consists of approximately 675 stocks from 21 different emerging market economies. The largest country allocations go to Taiwan (20%) and South Korea (17%), with Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong, India, South Africa, Brazil, Malaysia, and Indonesia also receiving significant weightings. Small Cap EM ETFs EEMS isn’t the first ETF to focus on small cap stocks in emerging markets. ETF Pipeline: Floating Rate Bonds, European Bonds, And More

The past week has seen the continuation of brisk expansion in the ETF industry, with more than a dozen new products debuting. The product pipeline continues to fill as well, with the most noteworthy addition being PIMCO’s proposed Total Return ETF. Many of the other recent filings haven’t brought nearly the level of attention paid to the potential entrance of bond king Bill Gross into the ETF space, but there have been several interesting developments on the product development front over the last several days: iShares Plots Floating Rate Bond ETF iShares, the San Francisco-based ETF issuer known for its dominance of the ETF industry, continues to be active on the product development front, recently filing with the SEC for a new variable rate bond fund. Following a year that saw some of the worst performances in recent memory, many asset classes have bounced back in 2009. But some have performed better than others, and as the year draws to a close we take a look at some of the best-performing ETFs. The year’s top gainers include a few of the largest and most-heavily traded funds, but the majority of those that made the list are lesser known ETFs likely off the radar of many ETF investors. Under the Hood of “Target Retirement Date” ETFs

The exchange-traded fund industry has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years due to the significant advantages of these investment vehicles over traditional mutual funds and individual securities. Perhaps most notably, ETFs offer investors a cost-efficient mechanism to gain access to a diversified basket of securities. ETFs allow investors to create a well-diversified investment portfolio by holding only a handful of assets. A relatively new ETF innovation, however, takes this efficiency to the extreme – offering access to a complete portfolio through a single ETF. Under the Hood Target retirement date ETFs are the ultimate in a passive, buy-and-hold investment strategy. An investor simply selects the fund that corresponds to his or her intended retirement date (e.g., 2035 fund) and allows the ETF managers to do the rest.
