Stocks endured yet another bumpy trading session as indexes oscillated between gains and losses for most of the day thanks to mixed economic developments. On the home front, Exxon Mobil posted strong quarterly earnings, although lackluster home prices data overshadowed the energy giant’s profits. The Nasdaq proved to be most resilient, gaining 0.07% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped lower, shedding 0.16% as the trading session drew to a close. Gold prices whiplashed back-and-forth as investors dealt with conflicting developments; futures contracts for the precious metal soared as high as $1,750 an ounce, only to tumble back to $1,730 an ounce in a matter of hours, and finally settle near the $1,740 level as the closing bell rang. Equity markets got off to a choppy start as major indexes oscillated between minor gains and losses throughout the first trading day of the week. Investor sentiment turned for the worst on Monday as resurfacing Greek debt woes brought the limelight onto the debt burdened currency bloc once again. Stocks tipped to the downside as the U.S. dollar appreciated in the currency markets; the S&P 500 led the way lower with a 0.25% loss on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average proved most resilient, shedding only 0.05% [see also ETF Insider: Bears Are Lurking Around The Corner]. The tug of war between domestic economic data releases and developments overseas in the debt burdened currency bloc continues. Stocks fluctuated between minor gains and losses on Thursday as investors digested worse-than-expected employment data at home, along with an encouraging debt auction on the other side of the Atlantic. The Nasdaq led the way higher, with gains of 0.51% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, inching higher by 0.17%. Gold dipped a little lower on the day, with futures prices for the precious metal settling nearing $1,650 an ounce. U.S. stocks fell in early morning trading as investors got a little spooked following a concerning employment data release on the home front; the latest weekly jobless claims report came in worse-than-expected, with 399,000 people filing for unemployment benefits versus the expected 380,000. 2011 was the year of the euro, but most investors are hoping for the opposite to be true this year. Rather than focusing on the issues overseas, investors would like to keep their minds occupied by the slew of encouraging data from recent U.S. reports. But for now, the euro zone remains under the microscope for the entire world. As for the euro itself, the currency is sitting at lows not seen for quite some time, as it seems to be losing ground to the greenback on a daily basis. Thursday’s ETF Chart To Watch: Vanguard European ETF (VGK)

Equity markets extended losses yet again as Euro zone fears dictated selling pressures on Wednesday. The Nasdaq led the way lower, sinking 1.55% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was a bit more resilient, giving up 1.10%. Investors gave into fear as Italy’s borrowing costs surged to a recent all-time high, while in the currency markets the euro broke below pivotal support at the 1.30 level versus the U.S. dollar. Profit taking struck quickly and violently in the gold market, as futures prices for the yellow metal plunged for a third day in a row, settling near $1,575 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. Daily ETF Roundup: UUP Surges On Weak Euro, VGK Slaughtered On Shaky Deal

Markets faced a brutal start to the week as the world decided that the recent euro deal was only prolonging the inevitable and not taking a step in the right direction. The Dow sank 162 points while the S&P 500 lost 1.5%, the most of any major index. 10 year bond prices surrendered just over 2% while oil sank down to $98/barrel, creating an interesting buying opportunity for the fossil fuel. By far the worst performer on the day came from gold, which saw its price sink by nearly $50/oz. or 2.9%. Despite today’s crushing blow, gold is still one of the best performing assets on the year, but with euro fears keeping the precious metal on the chopping block, the latter trading sessions of the year could spell trouble for the commodity [see also Three Reasons Why Gold Is Overvalued]. This week was yet another volatile one as investors weighed in their opinions on the euro zone and how its actions would shape the global economy. Investors were spooked today by more bad news from Europe as the ECB made an unexpected move. Almost every major asset class took a nosedive on the day as traders feel that Friday’s European summit will not bring the good news that many had been hoping for. The DOW lobbed off nearly 200 points and closed below 12,000 after a nice rallying period to start the month. The S&P 500 lost grip on the 1,240 mark that many hoped would act as a resistance level; the index dropped over 2.1% for the total session. Though it was a choppy day for gold, the precious metal was finally able to break its correlation rut and feature a small jump on the day. UBS Launches Risk On / Risk Off ETNs

UBS, the issuer behind one of the broadest lineups of ETNs available to U.S. investors, continued the aggressive expansion of its product lineup this week with the introduction of two unique offerings. The company rolled out a pair of blunt instruments designed to be used in high level “risk on / risk off” trades, a term that has become popular in recent months as risky assets have exhibited strong correlations with one another and so-called “safe havens” have thrived whenever uncertainty pops up. The new ETRACS Fisher Gartman Risk On On ETN (ONN) will seek to replicate the Fisher-Gartman Risk Index, a benchmark that includes long positions in various risky asset classes such as stocks and commodities and short positions in traditional safe haven investments such as sovereign bonds. Today started off on a rough note, as more troubles in Europe combined with the still unresolved debt crisis that has only a week left in its timetable. Stocks made a climb during midday to nearly break even, but then tumbled to finish out the day. The Dow lobbed off nearly 200 points while the S&P saw a decrease of 1.7%. Gold exhibited a similar trend to equities as the commodity has been frustratingly correlated as of late; the precious metal finished out the day with losses nearing $10/oz.
