Today was a peculiar day for the markets as indexes got off to a shaky start, but managed to recover their lost ground, while volatility ticked higher amidst the plethora of good news. On the home front, the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, posting a 0.05% gain on the day. Greece has reportedly reached an agreement with policymakers overseas, although the deal has not yet been officially finalized [see also February Edition Of ETF Edge Now Available]. Investors at home rejoiced over better-than-expected economic data; jobless claims came in at 358,000, beating analysts’ expectations of 370,000, while wholesale inventories also expanded by 1% after coming in flat last month. Stock markets had a whirlwind of a day as indexes fluctuated between gains and losses amidst the looming Greek debt negotiations, ultimately closing in shallow green territory. On the home front, the Nasdaq charged ahead, gaining 0.41% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average just barely pulled off a win, settling 0.04% higher on the day. Crude oil prices were also quite volatile, hitting a high of $100.09 a barrel in the morning, only to settle lower near the $99 level as the trading session drew to a close [see also Doomsday Special: 7 Hard Asset Investments You Can Hold In Your Hand]. With no major economic data releases on the home front today, equity markets took cues from overseas. Today was one of the best trading days in recent memory. The Dow rose 1.2%, hitting its highest levels since 2008, while the Nasdaq surged 1.6% to its highest level in 11 years; the S&P 500′s return of 1.5% wasn’t too shabby either. The big day was spurned by a better than expected unemployment report for January, which showed signs of an economic turnaround, though many analysts have warned that we need several more months like this in order to classify ourselves as recovering. On the commodity side of things, gold futures were slaughtered with the price of the precious metal dropping by 1.8% as investors piled into equities. Stocks marched higher on Wednesday as investors rejoiced over encouraging fundamental economic data on all fronts. In the U.S., better-than-expected manufacturing and employment reports bolstered stocks higher; the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 1.22% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, inching higher by just 0.66%. Friday the 13th reared its unlucky head on markets today as equities took a bit hit on some major events. Despite all of the bad news that plagued markets, equities were able to resist a major sell-off that would be expected given the severity of today’s headlines. The Dow lost about 50 points while the S&P 500 dipped by about 0.5%; to put it quite frankly, the day could have been much worse. Stocks fluctuated between minor gains and losses on Thursday as investors digested worse-than-expected employment data at home, along with an encouraging debt auction on the other side of the Atlantic.
