Lastly, a worse-than-expected GDP report on Friday pushed domestic equities downhill, although many stocks did manage to climb higher throughout the day and recover some lost ground. Against this gloomy backdrop, nearly all of the model ETF portfolios were in red territory for the week, and the actionable ETF ideas delivered less than ideal returns.
Wall Street started the week once again in red territory as investors remain reluctant to jump back into the equity markets given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the debt-ceiling controversy at home. Gold continues to charge higher as the precious metal opened above $1,600 an ounce on Monday morning. Earnings season is well underway and so far corporate performance results have been mostly surprises to the upside. Nonetheless, equity markets have broadly declined since the beginning of the week as investors remain fearful of the consequences likely to arise if Congress doesn’t act quick and come up with a plan. Gold surged to new all-time highs on Wednesday, with futures prices hitting $1,631 an ounce, as several rating agencies have issued warnings that failure to raise the debt ceiling would trigger a downgrade of U.S. government debt. Crude oil on the other hand has drifted lower since Monday, and futures prices [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: Debt Doomsday Approaches

ETF Insider: Bullish On Equities

Three ETFs To Watch This Week: FXE, IEO, XLP

ETF Insider: Euro Woes Weigh On Earnings

ETF Insider: Beware Of Lingering Euro Fears

Crude oil on the other hand slowly crept up from $96 a barrel on Monday and ended up closing right under $100 a barrel on Friday. Weekly Outlook The coming week is stacked with several major economic reports on the international front , while investors at home will be kept even as a round of data from the housing and manufacturing sectors hits the street.
By many measures, the U.S. economy has come a long way since the depths of the most recent recession; since bottoming out in early 2009, most equity indexes have climbed sharply higher and reclaimed much of the ground lost during the preceding free fall. GDP growth has swung back to the positive territory, the U.S. governments has closed out its positions in many bailed-out institutions (in some cases booking a gain in the process), and retirement portfolios across the country have bounced back. But there are plenty of reminders that we’re not out of the woods yet, and that the journey back to economic superpower status is a long road. More than likely, the boom is attributable to a number of different factors. Correlation between international equity markets (and even between stocks and bonds) has surged in recent years, increasing both the importance and difficulty of adding non-correlated assets to investor portfolios. Given the relatively weak correlation with other asset classes, commodities have found a home in many investors’ portfolios. Moreover, unprecedented injections of liquidity into the financial system have created anxiety over a coming uptick in inflation that could erode returns to stocks and fixed income instruments. Commodities have historically served as an effective inflation hedge, and many are once again turning to natural resources to protect assets from a surge in the CPI.
Whenever a company prepares for a public offering, executives have been known to spend an inordinate amount of time choosing the combination of letters that will serve as the company’s ticker and often nickname within the investment community. To many, the fixation on selecting the perfect ticker seems like an irrational obsession on par with Patrick Bateman’s affinity for business cards. But there’s some evidence to support the idea that picking a clever ticker can be worth quite a bit of money. An academic study titled “Would A Stock By Any Other Ticker Smell As Sweet?” (PDF) examined the performance of “clever ticker” stocks such as Southwest (LUV), Internet America (GEEK), Lion Country Safari (GRRR), and Explosive Fabricators (BOOM).
