Equity markets endured another back-and-forth week as investors digested mixed earnings and lackluster economic data releases. Industry giants Apple and Caterpillar both surpassed analyst expectations, while AT&T, Verizon, and SanDisk all missed the mark. Investors also fretted over the latest new home sales report for the month of December, which came in below the previous month’s reading, missing estimates entirely. Euphoria and gains from the first half of the week quickly evaporated during the final two trading days as profit taking pressures prevailed, despite the fact that U.S. GDP growth came in at an impressive 2.8%. The bulls took charge on Wall Street last week as investors reacted positively after a number of encouraging economic data releases. Home builders confidence and existing sales continue to point towards signs of a recovery in the battered down U.S. housing market. Better-than-expected jobless claims also helped restore confidence in the domestic economic recovery. Earnings euphoria also played a key role last week, although so far the results have been a mixed bag; industry giants like Google and Citigroup missed the mark, while Bank of America, IBM, and Intel beat analyst estimates. ProShares Launches 2x Leveraged, Inverse Biotech ETFs (BIB, BIS)

ProShares, a leading provider of leveraged and inverse ETFs, announced the launch on Friday of the first ETFs with leveraged and inverse exposure to the biotechnology sector. The Ultra Nasdaq Biotechnology (BIB) will seek to provide 200% of the return on the NASDAQ Biotechnology Index for a single day. The UltraShort Nasdaq Biotechnology (BIS) will seek daily returns equal to -200% of the daily movement in the same benchmark. The biotech sector is one of the most crowded corners of the ETF industry. There are currently five variations of biotech ETFs, including funds from iShares (IBB), Merrill Lynch (BBH), State Street (XBI), PowerShares (PBE), and First Trust (FBT). In aggregate, these ETFs have more than $3 billion in assets and trade well more than 1 million shares daily. As the array of ETF product offerings has expanded in recent years, the biotech space has seen significant activity. Currently, there are five biotech ETFs that have accumulated nearly $3.5 billion in aggregate assets. Each of these funds focuses on stocks in the biotechnology industry, and in many cases there is significant overlap between the top holdings. But as the relative performance of these funds so far this year has shown, the biotech ETFs available to U.S. investors are far from identical. Each of the biotech ETFs is up at least 6% so far in 2010, making this sector one of the best performers of the year. But the top-performing biotech ETF is up nearly 25% on the year, a significant return gap between funds that seem, at least on the surface, to be relatively comparable. As the ETF industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, continued innovation has enabled investors to achieve more granular exposure than ever through exchange-traded products. Diversified ETFs targeting relatively narrow sectors of the domestic and global economy have multiplied, including funds targeting the airline, gaming, insurance, gold mining, timber, and food and beverage industries. But the expansion of the ETF industry has also presented investors with more and more options for achieving their desired exposure within a particular asset class of industry. Biotech ETFs Surge Again On M&A News

Biotech ETFs, which saw tremendous gains earlier this week on news that Human Genome Science Inc.’s (HGSI) lupus drug had passed a key clinical trial hurdle, were big winners again on Thursday. The driver this time: news that antibody technology specialist Medarex had agreed to be acquired by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. at close to a 90% premium. While funds with significant holdings in Medarex were the biggest winners, healthcare and biotech ETFs were up across the board, as the acquisition sparked hopes of a wave of M&A activity in the industry, with other pharmaceutical and biotech companies, such as Alexion, Allos, and AMAG, as potential takeover targets.
