Home builders confidence and existing sales continue to point towards signs of a recovery in the battered down U.S. housing market. Better-than-expected jobless claims also helped restore confidence in the domestic economic recovery. Earnings euphoria also played a key role last week, although so far the results have been a mixed bag; industry giants like Google and Citigroup missed the mark, while Bank of America, IBM, and Intel beat analyst estimates. The S&P 500 finished up by less than a point, while the Dow tacked on 96 points for the session. Though this trading week was shortened by the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the S&P 500 was still able to gain 2% in the four open days on the week. As for commodities, Friday saw gold continue its steady rise as the precious metal is now above $1,660/oz. Oil, on the other hand, lost over 2% to finish just over $98/barrel [see also Three Reasons Why Gold Is Overvalued]. Better-than-expected housing market data bolstered markets higher on the second to last trading day of the year; the Dow Jones Industrial Average led the way higher, gaining 1.12% on the day, while the Nasdaq lagged behind, posting gains 0.90%. Upbeat economic data on the home front sent gold lower for the third day in a row this week, while crude oil climbed higher alongside equity markets [see 12 Rapid Fire ETF Ideas For 2012]. Prices for the precious metal and fossil fuel closed near $1,550 an ounce and $99.70 a barrel respectively. Stocks on Wall Street bounced higher on Thursday as positive economic data gave traders a good reason to recoup losses from yesterday. Optimism was further bolstered on news that Lowe’s bough online home-improvement retailer ATG Stores to expand its internet presence.
