April retail results came in lower than expected as many blamed the cooler than average temperatures for warding off shoppers and consumers willing to open their wallets.
Equity indexes on Wall Street oscillated between gains and losses throughout the majority of the trading week as slightly disappointing economic data releases were enough to encourage broad-based profit taking. Investors were displeased with a slow down in durable goods orders, although better-than-expected consumer sentiment on Friday helped to restore confidence. This week will see a host of important economic news on the home front which could potentially tip the markets lower if a correction develops, although the bulls will surely look to retain their dominance on Wall Street. Weekly Outlook Below, we highlight ETFs that may see an increase in trading activity as relevant market data is released and evaluated by investors: SPDR Gold Trust (GLD): Gold prices may have a volatile trading session on Tuesday as the latest FOMC minutes are released. Any hints of further quantitative easing could spark inflation fears and send GLD higher. Many investors fear that without a significant aid package, Greece will endure a widespread default which has the potential to sink markets around the world. Despite the issues persisting overseas, the focus of the week will still be heavily centered around the U.S. economy, as we close out earnings season and report unemployment figures on Friday. With a number of bellwether firms slated to announce earnings in the next few days, markets may soon shrug off Greek fears and focus on the domestic economy instead [see also The Ten Commandments of Commodity Investing]. Today will see the most recent earnings statement from Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM).
AdvisorShares, one of the largest issuers of actively-managed ETFs, has forged a partnership to bring an active sector rotation ETF to market. The new Rockledge SectorSAM ETF (SSAM), which began trading Thursday, will seek to generate stable and consistent returns in all market conditions, developing a dollar neutral portfolio comprised of sector ETFs. The new ETF will utilize the Sector Scoring and Allocation Methodology (“SSAM”), a technique based on a proprietary quantitative analysis model that forecasts the projected returns to various sectors of the U.S. economy. The ETF will establish long positions in sector ETFs that are expected to outperform the S&P 500 and short positions in those that are expected to underperform that benchmark. The result is a dollar neutral portfolio that will effectively capture the delta between the long and short positions–meaning that SSAM has the potential to deliver positive returns regardless of whether the S&P 500 is rallying [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETFs & Sector Rotation: Large Cap, Small Cap, Or International?

Sector ETFs During The Correction: XLE Slides, XLP Holds Ground

<a href='http://etfdb.com/2010/all-better-now-many-etfs-climb-back-near-pre-recession-levels/' title='All Better Now?
