Updated: Which ETFs Will Own Facebook (And When)

Today is the day: Facebook finally becomes a public company, trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol FB. The highly anticipated ETF is expected to bring massive trading volumes, and interest should remain elevated for the next several sessions. The IPO also spurs some rebalancings and reconstitutions for ETFs that will include Facebook in their underlying portfolios. But those managers can relax on Friday, as no ETFs will include Facebook during its first few trading days. Below is an updated list of which ETFs might make big allocations to Facebook–and when the addition of the social media giant will occur. Equity markets broadly charged higher on Wednesday following the latest FOMC announcement coupled with stellar earnings from Apple. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq took the lead, gaining an impressive 2.30% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, inching higher by 0.69% as the trading session drew to a close. As many had expected, gold went for a wild ride following commentary from Chairman Bernanke; futures prices dropped as low as $1,625 an ounce, only to spike right back up and settle just above the $1,640 level [see also Three ETFs For The End Of Operation Twist]. Investors payed little attention to the worse-than-expected durable goods data released in the morning; the monthly figure came in at negative 4.2%, falling short of the negative 2.9% estimate, as well as the previous reading of 1.9%. Equity markets staged a ferocious rebound today following Monday’s dismal sell-off. Investors brushed aside worse-than-expected economic data on the home front, instead focusing on upbeat commentary from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as well as a successful Spanish bond auction overseas. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq charged ahead, clinching gains of 1.82% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average just barely lagged behind, gaining 1.50% as the trading session drew to a close [see Free Report: Everything You Need To Know About Commodity ETFs]. Housing market and manufacturing data releases both came in worse-than-expected; housing starts in March came in at 654,000 versus the expected 703,000, while industrial production figures came in flat, versus expectations of 0.3% growth. Fund Managers Turn Bullish As “Risk Appetite” Increases

Although uncertainty continues to linger across financial markets, investors’ confidence in the global economic recovery has without a doubt improved considerably going forward, shaking off much of last year’s pessimism. Debt negotiations in the Euro zone have played a key role in ensuring stability, while better-than-expected economic data releases on the home front have helped to reignite optimism. According to a recent survey by Bank of America, global investors have started 2012 with fairly bullish prospects and greater appetite for risk [see also 12 Rapid Fire ETF Ideas For 2012]. The Bank of America Merrill Lynch Fund Manager Survey, which was conducted earlier in January of this year, shows that of the participating 214 institutional investors, reveals that few are predicting a global slowdown. AdvisorShares Rolls Out SectorSAM ETF (SSAM)

AdvisorShares, one of the largest issuers of actively-managed ETFs, has forged a partnership to bring an active sector rotation ETF to market. The new Rockledge SectorSAM ETF (SSAM), which began trading Thursday, will seek to generate stable and consistent returns in all market conditions, developing a dollar neutral portfolio comprised of sector ETFs. The new ETF will utilize the Sector Scoring and Allocation Methodology (“SSAM”), a technique based on a proprietary quantitative analysis model that forecasts the projected returns to various sectors of the U.S. economy. The ETF will establish long positions in sector ETFs that are expected to outperform the S&P 500 and short positions in those that are expected to underperform that benchmark. The result is a dollar neutral portfolio that will effectively capture the delta between the long and short positions–meaning that SSAM has the potential to deliver positive returns regardless of whether the S&P 500 is rallying [...]

European markets struggled to gain much traction as Italian debt woes remain far from resolved, although the uncertainty surprisingly did not spill over onto Wall Street. Domestic equity indexes worked their way higher, bolstered by positive economic data and improving investor confidence in the U.S. economic recovery. The Nasdaq led the way higher with a robust 1.09% gain on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, clinching a minimal 0.14% gain. Crude oil prices climbed alongside equities, settling just below $100 a barrel for the day.
