This week will watch earnings season continue in full stride as a number of bellwether firms are set to announce their most recent fiscal quarter’s statements. Last week saw some mixed results, with companies like Citigroup and Google missing, while others like Wells Fargo, IBM, and Intel were able to lift markets. In fact, the S&P 500 was able to break through the 1,300 barrier for the first time since August of last year, sparking some much needed investor confidence. Many are also happy to see the focus come off Europe for a while and keep the U.S. in headlines, especially because our last few profitable earnings seasons have been largely overshadowed by international affairs. AdvisorShares Rolls Out SectorSAM ETF (SSAM)

AdvisorShares, one of the largest issuers of actively-managed ETFs, has forged a partnership to bring an active sector rotation ETF to market. The new Rockledge SectorSAM ETF (SSAM), which began trading Thursday, will seek to generate stable and consistent returns in all market conditions, developing a dollar neutral portfolio comprised of sector ETFs. The new ETF will utilize the Sector Scoring and Allocation Methodology (“SSAM”), a technique based on a proprietary quantitative analysis model that forecasts the projected returns to various sectors of the U.S. economy. The ETF will establish long positions in sector ETFs that are expected to outperform the S&P 500 and short positions in those that are expected to underperform that benchmark. The result is a dollar neutral portfolio that will effectively capture the delta between the long and short positions–meaning that SSAM has the potential to deliver positive returns regardless of whether the S&P 500 is rallying [...]

ETF Insider: High Hopes, Big Gains

Equity indexes finished the week in bright green territory thanks to a spectacular rally on Wednesday. Euphoria swept over equity markets all over the world last week after major central banks, including the Fed and the European Central Bank, collaborated to lower the cost of dollar funding in an effort to improve liquidity and restore confidence back in the markets. Investors saw the collective bank agreement as a key positive development, as lawmakers from around the globe demonstrated their commitment to maintain stability across financial markets. On the home front, U.S employment data surpassed analyst expectations, with the unemployment rate coming in at 8.6% versus the expected 9%. Domestic equity markets started off the week on a strong note as investors were optimistic to see a very strong start to the holiday shopping seasons, showcasing that U.S. consumers are still alive and kicking. Euphoria swept over stocks on Wednesday after the Fed and the central banks of the euro area, Canada, Japan, U.K., and Switzerland all agreed to reduce the cost of offering dollar financing through swaps. Tuesday’s ETF Chart To Watch: Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV)

Despite starting off the week in hole, domestic equity indexes have turned in a monster performance for the month, with the S&P 500 clinching a stellar 11% gain in October. Profit taking swept across virtually every corner of the market on Monday after investors were a bit rattled by the Japanese bank intervening in the currency market and MF Global filing for bankruptcy. Gold futures tumbled lower and prices for the precious yellow metal settled near $1,720 an ounce as the trading day drew to a close. This week has several key events which are likely to be pivotal days for the markets, including an FOMC meeting as well as an interest rate decision from the European Central Bank. September ETF Data: Back Below $1 Trillion

September was a brutal month for equity markets around the globe, as anxiety over Europe and intensifying concerns about the growth prospects for many emerging markets hammered asset prices. The freefall in stock markets hit the bottom line of the ETF industry as well; despite another month of strong inflows, industry assets fell below the $1 trillion mark for the first time in several months. According to recent data from the National Stock Exchange, ETP assets finished the third quarter at about $973 billion, a decline of about 9% over the previous month. That slide came despite aggregate inflows into exchange-traded products of about $4.6 billion.Year-to-date inflows into ETFs totaled almost $79 billion through the first nine months, slightly ahead of the 2010 pace. Last week was quite grim for investors to say the least, as stocks across the board plunged Wednesday afternoon following the Fed’s decision to proceed with “Operation Twist” and nothing more. Equity indexes extended their losses and fell even lower the following day as investor worries surrounding the outlook of the U.S. economy intensified following Bernanke’s weaker-than-expected stimulus announcement. Meanwhile, in commodity markets, gold lost its luster amongst safe haven investors as the precious metal plunged big time on Friday, with futures prices shedding over 5% for the day, settling below $1,650 an ounce. Wall Street opened in deep red territory at the opening bell Monday morning as Greek debt woes resurfaced. Broad equity indexes climbed higher towards the end of the day however, further extending their gains into Tuesday, only to fall victim to profit taking in the final hours of trading. The Fed went ahead with the twist, and their decision to sell $400 billion of short-term Treasuries for longer-term ones spooked investors big time, sparking a broad-based, heavy volume sell-off across all corners of the market. Surprisingly, gold wasn’t the best defense this time around as the precious metal fluctuated during the day and sank lower after the Fed’s announcement, settling around $1,780 for the day. Domestic equity indexes climbed higher day after day last week, posting a very green performance as investors showed some (temporary) relief over the debt drama in Greece. In the bigger scheme of things however, there have been no real concrete measures undertaken by the ECB to fully restore confidence back in European financial markets; for that reason alone, we expect that volatile range-bound trading will remain the dominant theme across equity and currency markets. Gold had a tough time last week as stock markets rallied and the precious metal crept lower, dipping below the $1,800 an ounce level as the week drew to a close.
