Resurfacing Italian debt woes paved the way for persistent volatility in the markets last week, further deteriorating the economic outlook of the financially fragile currency bloc. Selling pressures overwhelmed the bulls on Wall Street, despite a host of better-than-expected economic data releases on the home front, including surprisingly strong retail sales, new home starts, industrial production, as well as a drop in jobless claims. Wall Street got off to a quiet start yesterday as investors were reluctant to aggressively jump back on board following last week’s volatile trading across both equity and commodity markets. Domestic indexes fluctuated between small gains and losses during trading hours on Monday, while overseas European shares tumbled lower after investor confidence sank following news of the S&P’s downgrade of Greek debt. “In our view, there is increased risk that Greece will take steps to restructure the terms of its commercial debt, including its previously-issued government bonds,” the rating agency said in a statement, also warning that more downgrades could soon follow. Share of Citigroup jumped back to pre-crisis levels as the financial giant underwent a reverse split, which combined 10 outstanding shares of Citi stock into one new share, effectively reducing the number of Citigroup shares outstanding to 2.9 billion from 29 billion. April ETF Data: Assets Set Record, EEM Strikes Back

ETF assets climbed to a new all time record in April according to the latest data from the National Stock Exchange, with a total of $1.14 trillion in more than 1,200 products at the end of last month. Total assets grew by more than 5% on the month, thanks to stellar performances from equities and commodities and another strong month of inflows. In total, more than $22 billion flowed into ETFs in April, representing more than 2% of March assets. U.S equities accounted for about half of the monthly inflows, with global equities and fixed income ETPs also jumping on surging investor interest. Commodity ETPs took in about $775 million on the month, though nearly $480 million flowed into short leveraged commodity ETPs–suggesting that investors were beginning to bet on a bubble that has popped in the first week of May. IndexIQ Debuts Global Oil Small Cap ETF (IOIL)

IndexIQ rolled out the latest ETF offering exposure to oil companies today, debuting the IQ Global Oil Small Cap ETF (IOIL). The new ETF will be the first exchange-traded product to offer exposure to global small cap companies engaged in the oil sector, including areas of exploration and production, refining and marketing, and equipment, services and drilling. IOIL will seek to replicate the IQ Global Oil Small Cap Index, a benchmark that consists of about 60 small cap oil companies from more than a dozen emerging and developed economies. Oil refining and marketing stocks account for about 40% of the underlying benchmarks, with exploration and production firms making up 37% or so and the remainder attributable to equipment, services, and drilling firms. Wall Street started the trading week on an upbeat note after news of Osama bin Laden’s death on Sunday night sparked optimism in the dollar and pushed overseas markets broadly higher. Speculators were quick to sell gold, silver, and oil in the futures market overnight, but the reaction was overdone and the three hot commodities were quick to find support and work their way back up during NYSE trading hours on Monday.
