Equity markets soared to multi-month highs last week as investors digested encouraging economic data on the home front coupled with positive corporate performance surprises. Wall Street ended the week on a high note after the unemployment rate fell to 8.3%, paving the way for the bulls before Superbowl weekend. Looking forward, with earnings seasons dwindling down to its final releases, investors will need to once again consider the situation in Europe. Greek debt woes have resurfaced early this week as lawmakers overseas continue to struggle to reach a bailout agreement. With no major economic data releases at home this week, investors will likely have to shift their attention back to the debt burdened currency bloc, whether they like it or not. Equity indexes tacked on minor gains as back-and-forth trading prevailed throughout most of Thursday. Investors on Wall Street shrugged off worse-than-expected jobless claims data on the home front as encouraging debt auction news from overseas stole the spotlight. Equity markets hit the ground running last week as investors came back from the holiday weekend with a fairly optimistic outlook for 2012. Bearish pressures took hold of Wall Street on Monday after leading microchip manufacturer, Intel, cut its revenue forecast while Moody’s rating agency said it would have to review the rating on all Euro zone member nations. Last Friday’s summit in Brussels proved to be a pivotal step in restoring investors’ confidence, although Moody’s noted that European policymakers are only taking incremental steps, rather than presenting a more decisive, comprehensive solution to combat the pressing issues. With the holidays quickly approaching, the retail sector of the U.S. economy is gearing up for a short stretch that could make or break profitability forecasts and the mid-term outlook for companies that have exhibited surprising strength over the past 12 months. Retailers are already preparing for blow-out sales, Black Friday mania, and the oncoming slew of Christmas shoppers. Investors are focused on the retail sector this time of year as many companies generate significant portions of annual revenues and profit during the holiday months of November and December. Last year’s holiday season saw sales skyrocket more than 5% in comparison to 2010.
