Stock markets have endured an up-down week thanks to looming Euro zone debt woes plaguing investors’ confidence. Volatility levels remain elevated as the threat of Greece exiting the euro appears to have intensified. On the home front, economic data releases have been largely positive; new home sales data beat expectations, along with stronger-than-expected durable goods orders in April. Major equity indexes appear to be stabilizing, although lingering Euro zone drama may very easily steal the headlines next week [see ETF Technical Trading FAQ]. Investors will turn their attention to the latest University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment report later today to gain more insights into the health of the domestic consumer. With no shortage of worries spilling over from the Euro zone, increasing uncertainty on Wall Street turned into a dismal multi-day sell-off to start the week. The political situation in Greece remains turbulent as the debate whether or not to implement austerity continues to wage between opposing parties. Economic data releases on the home front have been sparse, although surprisingly positive, however, investors have largely ignored domestic headlines given the more frighteing developments taking place overseas [see also 5 ETFs For A China Bank Bubble]. For those that are taking note of domestic economic news, the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index release later today could draw some attention depending on the results. Domestic equity indexes staged an impressive comeback on Thursday as stocks climbed out of a hole in the final hours of trading. Mixed economic reports played a key part in paving the way for back-and-forth trading throughout most of yesterday. Weekly jobless claims were encouraging, although the figure ultimately missed estimates; 359,000 people filed for unemployment benefits versus the expected 345,000. U.S. GDP also came in below expectations; domestic economic growth came in at 3% versus analyst estimates of 3.2% [see also 3 ETFs For The End Of Operation Twist]. For many investors, March 9, 2009 was a major turning point; on that day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 6,550, capping a disastrous stretch that had erased billions of dollars from portfolios around the world. Fortunately, that proved to be the low point of the recent recession; the next day markets rallied, and continued to move generally higher throughout the end of the year. So it should be no surprise that most ETFs offering exposure to risky asset classes now boast impressive three year return figures; most are well into positive territory, and many have more than doubled over the past 36 months or so.
