Perhaps aiming to capture a greater portion of this market, iShares recently announced plans to tweak its S&P North American Technology-Semiconductors Index Fund (IGW). The company plans to change the ticker and underlying index of the largest semiconductor ETF (excluding Merrill’s HOLDRS product), which will be listed on the NASDAQ Exchange effective October 15. The index underlying the fund will change from the S&P North American Technology-Semiconductors Index to the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, a modified cap-weighted benchmark consisting of about 30 semiconductor stocks.
The Semiconductor Industry Association recently reported a major increase in the sales of computer processing chips for the month of May, giving investors reason to optimistic on a sector that has been battered by recent market turmoil. Chip sales rose 4.5% from the previous month, and were up nearly 50% from the same month in 2009. “Many industry analysts have given bullish outlooks on the information-technology sector in recent months as demand has come back from year-earlier levels,” writes Nathan Beck. The surge in sales is primarily attributed to the world’s emerging markets, where sales for computation and communication devices have been steadily growing. Along with the major help from countries overseas, the recent wave of popularity in tablet computers (most notably the Apple iPad) and smartphones have also helped put the chip industry back on track. While overseas demand has increased, the chip industry has yet to fully regain [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Semiconductor ETF Gets A Makeover

Semiconductor ETFs In Focus As Intel Slashes Outlook

Semiconductor ETFs Soar On Intel’s Bullish Outlook

Direxion Launches Six New Leveraged ETFs

Semiconductor ETFs: Back On Track

Things got off to a rocky start when aluminum giant Alcoa posted disappointing sales and earnings figures. That shortfall increased investor anxiety as chip bellweather Intel stepped up to unveil its first quarter numbers after the close on Tuesday. But the chip company shattered analyst expectations, reporting net income of 42 cents a share and revenue of $10.3 billion. Wall Street was expecting earnings of 38 cents a share on revenue of just $9.8 billion. More importantly, however, Intel raised its outlook for the second quarter and full year 2010. Revenue is projected at $10.2 billion while gross margins are expected to be about 64%, or 3% higher than previously expected. For investors looking to make a pure play on technology, there are several broad-based technology funds, such as XLK and IYW, that invest in various technology-related companies. But there are also technology ETFs offering far more specialization, including funds focusing on software (IGV and PSJ), internet architecture (IAH), nanotechnology (PXN), and several other. One of the most popular corners of the technology sector focuses on semiconductors, a key component of almost every modern electronics product. On Thursday, BofA Merrill Lynch lowered its 2010 growth forecast for global semiconductor industry and downgraded ten chipmakers, including Intel Corp. “While we believe the correction will likely prove short and shallow, we think any hint [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Semiconductor ETF Gets A Makeover

Direxion Launches Six New Leveraged ETFs

Top Ten Performing Leveraged ETFs Of 2009

Definitive Guide To Semiconductor ETFs: Semiconductor ETFs 101

Semiconductor ETFs In Focus As Intel Slashes Outlook
