The bulls charged through Wall Street on Wednesday after a global central bank initiative to lower the cost of dollar funding through swap arrangements sent a wave of buying-euphoria across equity markets. Equity indexes tumbled into red territory on Tuesday following Moody’s most recent downgrade of Ireland. The ratings agency pushed Ireland’s credit rating to junk status, sending additional waves of panic selling throughout the market as investors prepare for other larger markets to be next in line for a downgrade. “To avoid a bigger correction, a big and surprising solution must come out [of] Europe,” said Lorenzo Di Mattia, manager of Sibilla Global Fund. On the home front, investors are keeping a close eye on corporate earnings, but even Alcoa’s impressive revenues were not able to lift stocks higher, as market volatility has been largely affected by headlines from overseas over the past two weeks. ETF Insider: Greedy In A Fearful Environment

There is an old Warren Buffett mantra that advises investors to be greedy when others are fearful (and vice versa). In the current environment, there is certainly no shortage of fear–or of opportunities. Despite a holiday-shortened week U.S. equity markets have been extremely volatile, surging in Tuesday trading only to crater on Wednesday thanks to a deluge of bad economic data. Both employment figures and manufacturing data came in very weak, suggesting to many that Friday’s crucial jobs report could bring bad news as well. While the sell-offs have taken some of the air our of our all-ETF portfolio, they have also created some opportunities. Once upon a time, exposure to the Chinese stock market was a binary decision for U.S. investors–they either had it or they didn’t. Thanks in part to increased flexibility in cross-border listings and in part to the proliferation of exchange-traded funds, investors now have countless options for exposure to the world’s second largest economy. In late 2004, the only ETF option for exposure to China was the FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index Fund (FXI), a fund that focuses on mega-cap companies and is tilted heavily towards big banks and oil giants.
