I know many people have not looked at their portfolios or portfolio statements since the beginning of the summer (or perhaps longer). Upon review they might see the iShares S&P 500 Growth (IVW ) was up approximately 25% for the year as of mid-September. To them, market sentiment might not have changed. However, in the last three months, it has.
The iShares S&P 500 Value ETF (IVE ) was 6.3% since mid-June, doubling the gain for the growth-oriented IVW. Meanwhile, the iShares Russell 2000 Growth ETF (IWO ) was up 7.6%. Smaller or more discounted companies were more rewarding to invest in this summer.
Should You Turn to Large Cap Value, Small Cap Growth or Both?
Will this trend continue? What impact will the Fed’s moves have on these styles? During VettaFi’s Equity Symposium on September 19, advisors will get answers to these questions. I’m moderating a discussion with two mutual fund managers from Voya Investment Management. One manager runs a large-cap value strategy and the other a small-cap growth one. I’m excited to talk to them about the current market environment, the role pending rate cuts will play on their preferred investment styles, and what types of stocks look appealing.
While we primarily write about ETFs on this site, there is lots of expertise to be gained from mutual fund managers. This will be the first session of the virtual event starting at 11:05 am ET and will last twenty minutes. Register today to catch it live or on replay.
Active ETFs Are Growing Part of ETF Market
Our next session for the virtual event will focus on actively managed ETFs. While active mutual funds were long popular, active equity ETFs have only been gaining traction the couple of years. Yet, active ETFs represented approximately 30% of the industry’s net inflows year-to-date as of August. Many of the largest asset managers now have an active ETF presence. For example, American Century offers a wide range of active ETFs under the Avantis and American Century brands. The Avantis US Small Cap Value (AVUV ) and the American Century Focused Dynamic Growth (FDG ) are two of them..
Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley has been bringing to market active ETFs run by the teams at Eaton Vance and Parametric. Examples include the Eaton Vance Floating Rate ETF (EVLN ) and the Parametric Equity Premium Income ETF (PAPI ). Industry experts from American Century and Morgan Stanley will join my VettaFi colleague Kirsten Chang at 11:25 am ET.
How to Choose Which Thematic ETFs to Put Into a Portfolio?
In the past when we hosted a virtual event tied to thematic investing, we asked advisors a key question. How much of your average client portfolio was invested in thematics? Many people select between 1% and 10%. But there are thematic ETFs tied to artificial intelligence, infrastructure and so many other mega-trends that it is hard to keep up..
During the symposium, my colleague Cinthia Murphy will dive into these trends with the help of experts from Global X and TCW. They are behind funds like the Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE ) and the TCW Artificial Intelligence ETF (AIFD ). Join them at 11:45 am ET.
Reducing the Home Bias from Client Portfolios
The final session for the symposium will focus on international equity investments. I will be joined by Jeff Weniger of WisdomTree. Weniger will cover why he thinks now is a great time to invest in undervalued international markets like Japan while being mindful of the currency risks. We will talk about the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (DXJ ) and the more broadly diversified WisdomTree International Hedged Quality Dividend Growth Fund (IHDG ).
Weniger will also highlight the value-oriented WisdomTree Emerging Markets High Dividend Fund (DEM ). DEM has more exposure to Taiwan than China and recently had a 5.9% dividend yield. This session will start at 12:05 pm ET.
I hope you will join VettaFi and our partners on September 19 to get up to speed on the equity markets before we kick off Q4. Register today. CE credits are available.
Addditionally, don’t forget to vote in the ETF Express Awards this week! VettaFi is a finalist for four of them.
