Future-Proofing Investments: Energy Constraints & Cloud Computing in the AI Era

Zeno MercerApr 10, 2025

As AI capabilities expand, energy constraints are emerging as a critical limiting factor for growth in compute-intensive sectors. This development has implications for infrastructure planning, geographic distribution of data centers, and the future of edge computing.

AI Energy Bottleneck

Technology leaders are increasingly concerned about energy supply limitations slowing the expansion of server infrastructure needed for AI development.

“I’m seeing more people worrying that there’s inherent energy supply limitations to how quickly they can grow their servers and their farms and their computational systems,” noted AI expert Illah Nourbakhsh. “The problem is energy production infrastructure is so slow to build that we have this gap between how quickly you can make more energy and how quickly people want it.”

This mismatch may reshape AI development geographically, potentially favoring regions with robust energy infrastructure or excess capacity. The trend creates potential investment opportunities in energy infrastructure specifically targeted at data center demands.

Cloud vs. Edge Computing Debate

While some technology companies champion edge computing — processing data locally on devices rather than in centralized data centers — the conversation highlighted significant economic challenges to this approach.

“The people who tell you, ’We’re gonna make this awesome company, we’re gonna do all this crazy edge compute stuff, we’re gonna do everything on this little chip, on this little device that we have in our hand’… you’re never gonna be able to compete,” Nourbakhsh argued.

The economics fundamentally favor cloud-based solutions due to scale advantages and increasingly fast connectivity. 5G and advanced network technologies are reducing latency to near-real-time levels. So the practical advantages of edge computing diminish for many applications.

Semiconductor & Hardware Investments Implications

The discussion pointed to long-term challenges for companies like Nvidia that depend on ever-increasing compute demand. As AI algorithms become more efficient, hardware manufacturers may face margin pressure.

“People will simply become more clever at using compute to do more with less compute. And that’s not a pretty picture for them long term, if you’re constantly looking for exponential growth,” noted Nourbakhsh.

This trend suggests investors should carefully evaluate claims about edge computing’s market potential. It also  suggests recognizing efficiency improvements may eventually moderate demand growth for specialized AI chips.

For sectors like autonomous vehicles that require sophisticated local sensing capabilities, the minimum viable product threshold remains dauntingly high. Despite advancements in AI, the physics and economics of certain hardware components — like LIDAR sensors — present persistent challenges that software alone cannot overcome.

The conversation suggests promising opportunities may emerge in companies developing infrastructure-based sensor networks that could amortize costs across multiple vehicles or applications. This could potentially create new platform opportunities for data aggregation and analysis.

Smart investors will need to distinguish between genuine technological advantages and wishful thinking as capital continues flowing into AI-adjacent hardware and infrastructure.
