Sell on the Pop Prospects: January 14 Edition

Sneha ShahJan 14, 2026
2026-01-14

Here is a look at ETFs that currently offer attractive short selling opportunities.

The ETFs included in this list are rated as sell candidates for two reasons. First, each of these funds is deemed to be in a downtrend based on the fact that its 50-day moving average is below its 200-day moving average, which are popular indicators for gauging long-term and medium-term trends, respectively.

Second, each of these ETFs is also trading above its 20-day moving average, thereby offering a near-term ‘sell on the pop’ opportunity given the longer-term downtrend at hand. Note that this prospects list also features a liquidity screen by excluding ETFs with average trading volumes below the one million shares mark. As always, investors of all experience levels are advised to use stop-loss orders and practice disciplined profit-taking techniques.

  • Only 31 ETFs made it to the list of sell on the pop prospects this month. All major US indices increased month-on-month, with the U.S. payroll data indicating steady but slow economic progress, and investors betting on an imminent growth surge.
  • Several real estate-focused funds like iShares U.S. Real Estate ETF (IYR A-), Schwab U.S. REIT ETF (SCHH A+), and Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE A-) featured on the sell on the pop list. Real estate funds likely grew, driven by falling interest rates and strong demand for multifamily and industrial assets. Increased capital inflows, fueled by crowdfunding and tokenization, outweighed private credit turbulence as investors prioritized diversification and real assets.
  • Many bitcoin funds such as VanEck Bitcoin ETF (HODL ), Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC ), and Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB ) also made it to the list. Recent Bitcoin gains stem primarily from crypto-native firms, supported by minimal selling pressure from miners, family offices, and institutional funds.
  • Oil ETFs like United States Oil Fund (USO B) and ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Crude Oil (UCO A) were contenders on the sell on the pop list. Oil prices rose as investors weighed supply risks. Intensifying Iranian protests created upward pressure, while the stabilization of Venezuelan exports helped offset gains and steady the market. Compare and contrast the two ETFs here
