This ETF gives investors a tool to bet against the performance of investment grade corporate debt, and is linked to the same index underlying the ultra-popular LQD. Given this focus, IGS probably isn't appropriate for any investors building a long-term, buy-and-hold portfolio; this fund would be more useful for those with a bearish outlook on this corner of the bond market and looking to implement a shorter-term tactical short position in this asset class. Those looking for short exposure to the broad investment grade debt market (including both corporate debt and Treasuries) may prefer SAGG, which is linked to the same index as AGG and BND. It should be noted that IGS maintains a daily reset feature, and as such is designed to offer -100% exposure to the specified index over a single trading period. When held for longer or shorter than a single day, the performance of IGS will depend on volatility in the underlying index as well as direction. Moreover, investors should note that there are differences between utilizing an inverse ETF and a short position in a long product; the potential for loss and exposure to compounding returns are some of the factors to consider.
