This leveraged ETF is designed to amplify daily exposure to U.S. Treasuries with between three and seven years to maturity, making it one of the more precise tools in the ETF lineup. Given the daily reset feature and risks inherent in leveraged products, TBZ probably doesn't make much sense for those with an extended time horizon, and as such shouldn't be included in any long-term, buy-and-hold portfolios. TBZ will be much more useful to those looking to establish a tactical short position on the short end of the Treasury curve, and may also be used as a component in a variety of complex, shorter-term investment strategies. Investors considering a position in TBZ should be aware of the daily reset feature; TBZ is designed to deliver -200% exposure to the target index over a single trading session only. When held for longer or shorter than one day, performance can be impacted by the nuances of compounding returns--which may work for or against investors. TBZ can be an effective tool for investors looking to hold for multiple sessions; those who understand the complexities associated with daily resets and compounding returns and are willing to monitor the position regularly may hold this leveraged ETF for an extended period of time. Those seeking to leverage up inverse exposure to longer-dated Treasuries may prefer TYO, PST, TMF, or TBF.
