This product offers exposure to intermediate-term Treasuries, giving investors a precise tool for fine tuning the fixed income side of their portfolio. Given this specific focus, DFVL might be too granular for inclusion in many long-term portfolios; it's better used as a tactical tool to bet on strong performance from a specific corner of the Treasury market.
There are several elements of DFVL that should be considered and understood before establishing a position. First, DFVL is an ETN; that means that investors are exposed to the credit risk of the issuing institution. The ETN structure also has some advantages; DFVL will not incur tracking error, which can be a major drag on return in ETFs that implement futures-based strategies. The ETN structure can also result in unique tax treatment compared to comparable ETNs. It should also be noted that the index to which this ETN is linked consists not of Treasuries but of futures contracts; as such, DFVL can exhibit returns and volatility that are different from products that invest directly in Treasuries.
One potential drawback of this product is the relatively high expense ratio; DFVL's fees are considerably higher than some of the alternatives in the Government Bonds ETFdb Category that offer similar exposure.
